Needville senior Walker Warncke has done it all for the Blue Jays.
In 2019, he had nearly 1,000 all-purpose yards, nine touchdowns, 82 tackles and four interceptions.
Warncke’s efforts earned him utility player of the year honors on the District 13-4A DI all-district team.
“My junior season was huge for me,” Warncke said. “I credit my coaches for always putting me in the correct position week by week. They put me consistently be around the ball and help me make big plays.”
Now Warncke is looking for more in 2020.
“I am very excited to see what my senior season has to hold,” Warncke said.
“I believe I will be playing a little bit of running back and wide receiver this season on the offensive side of the ball. (I’ll be at) free safety on the defensive side.
“There is always something cooking in our coaches’ film room week by week, so I always go into a game week with an open mind ready for whatever position is thrown on my plate.”
Warncke showed what he could do with the order of the day during the Blue Jays’ area playoff game last season.
Warncke carried the ball 12 times for 185 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Boerne.
The senior is setting the bar high for himself and his teammates for 2020.
“We now know how much hard work and dedication it takes to become district champions and make a deep run in the playoffs,” Warncke said. “As a senior, my class and I will have to reflect off last year to prepare us for the future.”
Warncke is also seeking to finish strong in his senior season with multiple Division I college football coaches’ eyes on him.
The senior Blue Jay has scholarship offers from Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Yale University, United States Air Force Academy, United States Military Academy, Lafayette College, Abilene Christian University, the University of Central Arkansas and Rice University.
“I am very fortunate and blessed to be in the position I am in today,” Warncke said. “School has always been a top priority for me.
“Taking care of business on and off the field has opened many doors for me and my future.”
Warncke believes the Blue Jays will be ready to go for 2020.
“Coach Giles has done a tremendous job during this pandemic, making sure all of us football players are keeping our ducks in a row,” Warncke said. “Whether it be watching film, making sure we are getting a good lift in to keep our bodies in tip-top shape or to take on the summer workout plan.
“It all runs right into fall ball.”
