With these humble words on the day after his inauguration, Donald Trump tweeted out his contract with the nation. Some had wondered whether becoming commander-in-chief would change his impulsive communication style, or at least insert a precautionary step into social media posts to give someone the chance to apply a spellcheck and perhaps some reflection on the content.

“Honered” instead of “honored” was their answer: this would be a presidency that would disrupt not just the English language but the protocols of communication, the traditional style of the office and the conventions of American politics.
