Report: Texas safety B.J. Foster quits the team during UTEP game

A shocking report surfaced Sunday morning that Texas safety B.J. Foster chose to quit the team during the third quarter of the season opener against UTEP.

It appeared things were going as great as possible on the Texas sideline. Despite limited offseason work due to the COVID-19 pandemic and several new faces on the roster and coaching staff, Texas looked fundamentally sound, prepared and showcased talented depth at nearly every position.

The two new coordinators and seven new assistant coaches don’t favor every player. No one is freely handed a starting role or playing time simply because of the previous production, length in the program or former five-star rating. It appears Foster did not win the starting role and was frustrated with his lack of playing time against UTEP.

Rivals reporter Anwar Richardson released the news on Sunday. Whether Foster regrets his decision in the heat of the moment or not has yet to be seen.

Foster broke his hand in June after punching a car, but began voluntary workouts in spite of the injury shortly after. The talent in the secondary at Texas is incredible, therefore any missed time is an opportunity for another player to step up.

In Texas’ first official depth chart, defensive back Chris Brown appeared to win the starting role at strong safety. Foster was listed as the backup to Brown while Tyler Owens was listed as the third string.

Foster is a third-year defensive back who has appeared in 22 games throughout his collegiate career at Texas. As a sophomore in 2019, he played in nine games while starting eight. He missed the Longhorns’ contests against Rice, Oklahoma State and TCU due to injury.

He totaled 34 tackles, four tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one pass breakup and one interception last season.
