Philosophy Graduate Admissions Spreadsheet

There’s an open-access spreadsheet all about philosophy graduate program admissions, including relevant links and information about application deadlines, fees, requirements, funding packages, and which departments have suspended admissions for the next academic year.

The document is maintained by Lindsay Whittaker, a graduate student at the University of Washington. You can check it out below or at this link.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on university budgets, several philosophy departments will not be accepting new applicants this year. As of the publication of this post, those departments are: Rice University, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, and University of Chicago (click school names for the relevant announcements).

At least one department has announced that while it is accepting applicants, it cannot offer any funding: University of Warwick.

Mod here: if folks notice errors or have additional pieces of information feel free to let me know here, with a comment on the spreadsheet, or via email. Links break, deadlines change (I audit often but things may still slip through), and there are pieces that are missing (especially fee waiver information).

For GRE things, credit goes to Frederick Choo and the other folks who have been in active conversations with departments. You can see his information here: https://frederick-choo.weebly.com/gre-philosophy-2021-admission.html

I also think it’s worth naming that the current format of the spreadsheet is not accessible in a number of respects. Accessibility is something the next iteration will be centering and testing for much more explicitly (but that doesn’t mitigate the fact that the current version has elements that are not accessible).

This is a great initiative, many thanks to Lindsay! About the University of Warwick: in the UK things work differently from the US and there are several alternative sources of funding for PhD students in addition to Departmental scholarships. Even in “normal” times, many of our PhD students are not funded by the Department, but through external schemes, which should still be available for 2021-22 applicants. A list of these additional sources of funding can be accessed here: https://warwick.ac.uk/services/dc/schols_fund/

Rad! It looks like for Warwick only the MA was noted on the sheet. I’ll add information about the PhD and add a note about the current funding constraints and options!

Loyola Chicago has suspended Ph.D. admissions for this application cycle (2020-2021, for the 2021-2022 academic year) due to lack of funding.

There has been an update for the University of Pennsylvania. We will be considering applications from two groups of applicants.
First, we will be considering applications for the JD/PhD program. Second, we will be considering applications of students with external funding.
