LCU History: Taking a Look at September 19

The First-Ever Home Volleyball Match Was Played On This Date in 1978... A Win Over West Texas A&M

September 19 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from September 19. Pictured is Diane Fogarty (Ries), who is shown with a kill attempt in LCU's first-ever home game on this date in 1978, which resulted in a win over West Texas A&M.
 
Men's Cross Country
  • Joseph Carrasco was

    Lubbock Christian's top finisher in 35th with a time of 28:36 and Carsten Russell finished right behind with a time of 28:37 as LCU took fifth at the 2015 Buffalo Stampede.
  • Lubbock Christian took eighth place out of 12 teams at the 2008 Red Raider Invite with 211 team points. The top finisher for the Chaps was Eddie Caballero, who placed 35th with a time of 27:38.21.
 
Volleyball
  • Three days after their inaugural meeting in 1978, the first-year Lady Chaparrals defeated West Texas A&M again, but this time in front of 500 fans in Lubbock Christian's first-ever volleyball home match inside the Fieldhouse. Cheryl Skaggs led LCU with 13 points in the match.
  • In a 1980 tournament involving junior college (counted that season), Lubbock Christian opened the Rice hosted tournament (Houston, Texas) defeating Alvin Community College.
  • LCU defeated Hardin-Simmons 3-1 in a 1986 meeting in Abilene, Texas. Debbie Denison (Hendricks) led the Lady Chaps with 15 points and a pair of aces.

    played four matches on the day at the 1987 NAIA District 8 Preseason Tournament, claiming wins over Sul Ross and Howard Payne. The Lady Chaps were the lone team at the tournament inside Hunt P.E. Center (McMurry, Abilene, Texas) to go unbeaten in pool play, but would finish in third place following their tournament-play win over Howard Payne.
  • Jody Hamrick returned from injury with an explosive performance in 1992 District 8 play, posting 19 kills and 22 digs for a double-double to help LCU defeat Dallas Baptist 3-1 inside LCU Fieldhouse. Amy Land (Mangum) also had 12 kills to aid Hamrick and the Lady Chaps performance.
  • Following their upset of No.8 Texas Lutheran the prior day, the No.20 Lady Chaps continued the Texas Lutheran Tournament in Seguin, Texas with another upset, topping No.15 St. Mary's before closing the tournament with a 4-0 record by defeating Huston-Tillotson. The win over TLU came on the final match of Friday's schedule, and the win over StMU was the first game of play on Saturday. Mindy Ratliff (Jones) had 12 kills in each match to claim All-Tournament honors and Kari Barrett (Bezner) had 32 assists in each match.
  • The 2003 Chap Classic opener would see LCU top John Brown 3-0 inside Rip Griffin Center. Meagan Kamplain (Dover) (16) and Stacy Simpson (Thompson) (14) combined for 30 kills in the LCU victory.
  • Playing without three regular starting players, the Lady Chaparrals were able to hold a 2-0 lead to defeat Wiley College 3-2 and then held off tournament host Texas Wesleyan 3-2 as well to go unbeaten in the opening day of the 2008 Hughes-Wesleyan Classic at Advantage Sports Complex

    in Fort Worth, Texas. Elissa Loynes (Bowman) combined for 29 kills (16 & 13) and Jordan Goings had 93 assists (50 & 43) on the day.
  • On the final day of action at the 2009 Lee Invitational (Cleveland, Tenn.), LCU claimed a 3-1 win over Embry-Riddle (Fla.). Bailey Jones (Hall) led LCU with 15 kills in the match, as LCU hit .302 in the win.
  • Jordan Goings recorded 40 assists and Brittany Johnson (Graham) and Jones (Hall) combined for 22 kills, as LCU garnered their eighth consecutive win with a 3-0 victory over University of Texas - Permian Basin Monday night inside Rip Griffin Center in 2011.
  • A career-high 10 blocks by Amy Edwards (Stephenson), along with double-digit kills from Channing Castleberry (Stewart), Ariel Froeschl (Gargula) and Abby White (Dunnam) steered Lubbock Christian to a non-conference four-set victory over Arkansas Tech at Tucker Coliseum (Russelville, Ark.) in 2014. Erin Fisher (Moore) provided 46 assists and LCU had 13.0 team blocks.
 
 
Women's Cross-Country
  • The Lady Chaps

    finished third out of six teams at the 2015 Buffalo Stampede hosted by West Texas A&M. Julia Winski (23:36) and Amira McKeee (23:38) took second and third place, respectively. 
  • At the 2008 Red Raider Invitational, Brittani Sigle and Lydia Kosgei both finished in the top 25 as LCU earned a fourth place finish out of ten teams. The Lady Chaps totaled 121 points, finishing above Abilene Christian and Eastern New Mexico.
