LCU History: Taking a Look at October 11

Stephanie Raley (Free) Surpasses 1,000 Career Kills in '88 and Mbarek Hussein Leads LCU MXC to '91 Texas Invitational Title

October 11 – We take a look at some of the top LCU athletic moments over the years from October 11. Pictured is Stephanie Raley (Free), who became the third Lady Chaps volleyball player to surpass 1,000 career kills in 1988 on this date.

  • Mbarak Hussein won the first race of his Lubbock Christian career, leading the Chaparrals to an overwhelming victory in the 1991 Texas Invitational. For LCU, it was their 12thconsecutive meet win, and the Chaps placed five runners among the first 10 finishers as they beat NCAA Division I teams like Texas, Alabama, Texas A&M and Rice.

  • Lubbock Christian earned a 2-1 comeback win over Newman in 2018, moving the Chaps to 6-3-3 overall. The Jets scored first, netting a goal at the 49:06 mark, but that lead lasted less than a minute as Emilio Marti scored off of a free kick exactly 30 seconds later. The game looked destined for overtime, but LCU was fouled in the box in the 88th minute and Fernando Flores converted the ensuing penalty kick to win the game. 
  • The Chaps built a 2-0 lead in the first 40 minutes of a 2014 matchup with Texas A&M International, but the Dustdevils fought back and forced overtime. Once there, Mbongeni Ndlovu was the hero, netting the golden goal in the 103rd minute to win the game for the Chaps, despite the fact that they were out-shot 32-11 in the contest.

  • LCU opened a 1985 two-match series with Sul Ross State by defeating the Lobos 3-1 in Alpine, Texas. The win was LCU's ninth straight win.
  • The 1986 Sul Ross Invitational in Alpine came to a close with LCU defeating Schreiner 2-0. LCU finished the tournament tied for second, with Karen Moulton producing 28 kills in two matches, with a .440 attack percentage.
  • LCU opened a 1988 season-long seven-match win streak with a 3-0 win over Howard Payne, which had ended a four-match home losing streak. Stephanie Raley (Free), who joined teammates Melissa Hines and April Parker with 11 kills apiece, became the third Lady Chap in program history to surpass 1,000 career kills.
  • In 1990, a LCU trimatch of NAIA District 8 programs in Wichita Falls, Texas included a 3-1 LCU win over Hardin-Simmons. Michal Warren (Giboney) assisted on 34 of LCU's 38 kills in the match, and also had 14 digs to complete a double-double. Marla Lowery also aided in the win with 12 kills and had four blocks, as Kerry Ennis joined Warren (Giboney) with a double-double (18 digs, 14 kills).
  • Howard Payne was also the opponent in 1991, as LCU claimed a 3-0 win over the Yellowjackets inside LCU Fieldhouse. At the time, the win was the 10th straight LCU win, which matched a program record. Jody Hamrick led LCU with 10 kills.
  • The 1997 Power Challenge, hosted by St. Edward's in Austin, Texas, continued with LCU defeating Aquinas College (Mich.) on the final day of action of the event.
  • The Lady Chaps won their fourth consecutive straight-set match during the 2001 season with a 3-0 win over Wayland Baptist. Beth Ratliff (Lankford) led LCU with 11 kills.

  • The final day of action at a 2003 Houston Baptist hosted tournament (Houston, Texas) featured LCU claiming 3-0 wins over Spring Hill and St. Francis (Ill.). Magan McCormick (Hupf) co-led LCU (with Ratliff (Lankford)) with 11 kills and also had five blocks against Spring Hill. Against UStF, Meagan Kamplain (Dover), Stacy Simpson (Thompson) and Ratliff (Lankford) each co-led LCU with 11 kills. Simpson (Thompson) also had 12 digs for a double-double, which was one of two for LCU (Mandy Polk (Moffitt) had 37 assists and 14 digs).
  • In 2005, LCU and Wayland Baptist met for the first of an eventual three matches during the season, with the Lady Chaps claiming a win inside Rip Griffin Center. Kenee Carter (Dover) paced LCU with 14 kills.
  • Oklahoma Baptist had a hiatus of not having volleyball as an intercollegiate program. The first year it made its return was 2008, and the first meeting against LCU resulted in a 3-1 LCU win in Shawnee, Okla. Elissa Loynes (Bowman) (16), Katie McGuire (15) and Suzanne Childress (13) combined for 44 kills in the match for LCU, who dropped the first set before bouncing back to win three straight. Childress added 15 digs to complete a double-double. Rachel Stuyvesant (Ketcherside) also had 48 assists, for a pace of 12.0 per set.
  • Lubbock Christian hung on for a tight four-set victory over St. Mary's at Rip Griffin Center in 2014, aided by a game-high 18 kills by Maddie Johnson and another 15 tacked on by Amy Edwards (Stephenson). Erin Fisher (Moore) (54 assists, 15 digs) and Channing Stewart (15 digs, 10 kills) each had double-double performances.
  • LCU collected a 3-0 straight-set win over UAFS (Arkansas - Ft. Smith) for their first-ever win over UAFS inside Stubblefield Center (1-7). The match marked the first time UAFS had ever lost a conference home match in straight-sets. Bradi Marshall posted 43 (14.3 per set) assists, Kelsie French led all players with 24 digs (8 per set), Maddie DeGuire had a match-high three aces and Lauren Zoller produced a double-double with 12 digs and 11 kills.

  • Defense was the storyline for the Lady Chaps in a 2018 battle with Texas A&M International at Dustdevil Field as they held the host team to zero shots on goal. Hollie Windham was the only player to find the back of the net, scoring what proved to be the game-winner in the 59th minute. 
  • The Lady Chaps and Dustdevils battled on this date in 2014 as well, with Lubbock Christian taking a 2-0 victory. Both LCU goals came right before the halftime break, with Claudia Sanchez scoring in the 43rd minute and Brooke Wendl scoring in the 45th.
