12/3/2020 4:03:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Four-game stretch begins at 5 p.m., Saturday, vs. South Carolina in Fertitta Center

HOUSTON – After winning three games in the first five days of the season, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program begins a season-long, four-game homestand when they play host to South Carolina at 5 p.m., Saturday, inside the Fertitta Center.

Fans should note the 5 p.m., tipoff time for Saturday's game, which was changed this week from earlier published schedules.

The Cougars enter this weekend's game following a 64-53 win over No. 14/13 Texas Tech during the final day of the Southwest Showcase inside Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, on Sunday.

With that win, Houston vaulted seven spots to No. 10 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll. It marked the second time in the last three seasons the Cougars ranked among the nation's Top 10.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Kelvin Sampson, the Cougars rank among the nation's premier defensive teams. Houston ranks fourth nationally with a 12.8 3-point field goal percentage defense and is allowing only 52.0 points per game to stand seventh in the country.

Sophomore guard Marcus Sasser leads the Cougars and the American Athletic Conference with 17.3 points and 4.0 3-pointers per game. The Red Oak, Texas, native also ranks eighth nationally with his 3-point average.

Senior guard DeJon Jarreau and junior guard Quentin Grimes are tied for the team lead with 7.3 rebounds per game apiece, while Jarreau is tops among the Cougars with 2.3 steals and 2.3 assists per contest.

With the Cougars' next win, Sampson will break out of a tie with Pat Foster and become the second-winningest coach in program history, trailing only Hall of Fame Coach Guy V. Lewis (592, 1956-86).

Foster collected 142 victories with the Cougars from 1986 to 1993.
