The Conference USA league office released its player of week awards Monday and the UAB football team received its third selection of the season.

UAB defensive end and linebacker Jordan Smith has been named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week for his role in UAB’s 21-16 division-clinching win over Rice at Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas.

As a unit, UAB held the Owls to 254 total yards of offense, a 5-for-19 showing on third-down conversions and collected 12 tackles for loss, including five sacks.

Smith tied a team-high with seven tackles and collected 2.5 sacks, including a sack on each of Rice’s final two possessions of the game. For the season, Smith has 37 tackles (9.5 tackles for loss), 4.5 sacks and eight quarterback hurries.

This is Smith’s first career Player of the Week honor and third overall Player of the Week award for UAB this year. Matt Quinn and Nikia Eason Jr. were both selected as Special Teams Player of the Week earlier this season.

The Blazers (5-3, 3-1 C-USA) are set to face Marshall in the 2020 Ryan C-USA Championship, Friday, Dec. 18, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST on CBS Sports Network.
