Sophomore middle blocker ranked third in nation in total blocks in 2019

HOUSTON – After emerging as a prolific defender a year ago, Houston sophomore middle blocker Rachel Tullos was named to the American Athletic Conference Preseason All-Conference Team, the league announced Monday.

Tullos was the lone representative to receive the accolade for the Cougars, who were picked to finish third in the West Division, as voted on by the league's coaches.

The Lantana, Texas, native wasted no time making a name for herself in her freshman season, becoming one of the best blockers in the nation in 2019. She not only led the league in total blocks (186) and blocks per set (1.37), but her 62 solo stops led all other Division I players, with the next closest being 42.

Last season also saw Tullos set new standards for the conference as well, shattering the league record for total blocks in a five-set match with 17. The previous record was 13. She would later be awarded The American Defensive Player of the Week, becoming the only non-libero to win the honor in 2019.

As result of her rookie campaign, at the end of the season, Tullos was named Volleyballmag.com's Freshman All-America Honorable Mention.

Tullos and the Cougars open their spring season on at 6 p.m., Friday, Jan. 22, when Houston hosts Rice inside the Athletics/Alumni Center.
