Houston Defeats Rice on Senior Day

Cougars secure six NCAA B-Cut times
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team defeated Rice in a 168.5 - 91.5 decision on Wednesday afternoon at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center.
Houston also celebrated their seven seniors Katie Higgins, Kaley Hoffman, Mykenzie Leehy, Samantha Medlin, Katie Power, Morgan Rosas, and Ioanna Sacha on their Senior Day.
"I'm very excited and very proud of our seniors today," said Head Coach Ryan Wochomurka. "I'm thankful for their leadership over the last four years, but especially this year in a year that has been challenging in so many ways. They spoke with their leadership all year and they spoke with their performances today. All of our seniors had phenomenal performances today and I'm excited for a lot of them to go out of their last home dual meet with individual wins and a great win against a very good Rice team today. I'm excited to turn our attention to the championship season."
The Cougars opened the day with a victory as Ioanna Sacha, Audrey McKinnon, Katie Higgins, and Katie Power combined for first-place in the 200 Medley Relay, clocking in with a time of 1:40.48.
Laura Garcia Marin was the first Cougar of the day to find a first-place podium finish and a program-record time in the 1000 Free. Touching in with a time of 1:00.99, the freshman now sits at eighth in program history in the event. Marin also placed first in the 200 Back, touching in at 1:55.41.
Senior Mykenzie Leehy had a great day sweeping in the Freestyle events, placing first in the 50 Free (22.95), 100 Free (49.00), and 200 Free (1:46.00). She earned D1 B-Cut times in both the 100 Free and 200 Free.
Samantha Medlin also celebrated her senior day following close behind Leehy in the Freestyle events placing second in both the 100 Free (50.10) and the 200 Free (1:49.13). Medlin finished first in the 500 Free, touching in at 4:51.55.
Ioanna Sacha earned a trio of first-place finishes and D1 B-Cut times as she placed first in the 100 Back touching in at 53.40, besting her previous lifetime best for the second-fastest time in program history. Sacha also finished at the top of the podium in the 200 IM clocking in at 1:59.84. In the 200 Back, Sacha clocked a time of 1:55.44.
Katie Higgins enjoyed her Senior Day with a top finish in the 100 Fly, finishing with a time of 53.71, in addition to a second-place finish in the 200 Fly (2:01.41). Her time in the 100 Fly is a D1 B-Cut.
Freshman Abby Jackson posted the sixth-best time in program history in the 200 Fly with a first-place finish in the event. Jackson clocked in at 1:59.21, posting an NCAA D1 B-Cut.
Freshman Hannah Farmer finished at the top of the podium in the 100 Breaststroke, touching in with a time of 1:02.25, a time that is now seventh in program history in this event.
Audrey McKinnon finished in a close second in the 100 Breaststroke, with a time of 1:02.42. The time is a lifetime best and is ranked eighth in program history. McKinnon secures a first-place finish in the 200 Breaststroke, touching in with a time of 2:15.28, moving into eighth all-time in event at UH.
The Cougars closed out the day with another relay victory as Marin, Leehy, Medlin, and Power combined for a time of 3:21.84.
