Lady Raider Comeback Falls Short at Rice

February 06, 2021 | Women's Tennis

HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raider tennis team fell short on Saturday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis  Center, as the team fell, 4-3, to Rice.

The Lady Raiders (2-1) opened the day by dropping the doubles point, which was decided by a tight, back-and-forth match on doubles line one.

After Rice struck first with a 6-1 win on court three, and Tech answered with a 6-2 win on two from Nell Miller and Margarita Skriabina, attention turned  to court one. Lady Raiders Lisa Mays and Kaitlin Staines were in a tough battle with Rice's Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi. The Owl duo would come up with the win, however, taking the match, 7-5, and giving Rice the doubles point.

Sophomore Olivia Peet would tie the match at one apiece with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court five over Anastasia Smirnova. The win moved Peet to an impressive 3-0 in dual matches this season.

Rice regained the lead shortly after, picking up wins over the Lady Raiders on courts one and six; however, Tech would strike back again to tie the match at three.

Margarita Skriabina was the first to respond, knocking off Anna Bowtell, 7-6(3), 6-1 on court four to move to 4-1 on the  year.

Lisa Mays remained perfect on the dual season, gutting out a three-set win over Michaela Haet. Mays, who took the first set, 6-4, had a tough second set which Haet won, 6-1. In the third, it was all Mays, as the freshman finished off the match with a 6-2 third-set victory and move to 3-0 in duals and 5-1 overall.

All tied up, the match came down to court three as Nell Miller had just forced a third set to extend her match with Federica Trevisan. Miller bounced back from losing the first set in a tiebreaker by taking the second, 6-3. In the third, the two traded blows for much of the frame, but Trevisan came out on top, 6-4, to clinch the win for the Owls.

Tech will look to wrap up the weekend strong when they take on Houston on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
