SWIM: C-USA Championship Day One Recap

ATLANTA - The 2021 Conference USA Swimming & Diving Championships are officially underway, as day one of the three day event has come to a close.
 
Rice holds the first place lead after the first day of competition with a score of 272.  Six-time defending league champion FIU sits in second at 248.  Florida Atlantic and Marshall are knotted up at 133 apiece to tie for third. North Texas is in fifth place (129), followed by Old Dominion (74). 
 
FIU began the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle medley relay, posting a time of 1:30.56, just slightly faster than its winning time from 2019 (1:38.35).  Rice was second at 1:40.65, while Florida Atlantic placed third at 1:41.82.
 
Rice’s Ellery Parish posted a win in the 500 freestyle for the third straight year with a time of 4:44.77.  FIU’s Stephanie Hussey came in second at 4:51.44, followed by Shannon Campbell of Rice with a 4:53.12 showing that placed her third.
 
Old Dominion’s Tara Enneking posted a first place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.41, narrowly edging Rice’s Nicole Limberg (2:02.43).  Rice’s Lauren Hurt took silver with a mark of 2:02.62. 
 
Marshall’s Darby Coles won the 50 Freestyle, tapping first with a time of 22.07.  Elinah Phillip of FIU was close behind with a mark of 23.01, followed by Rice’s Madison Howe at 23.17. 
 
The top two finishers in the 3-meter hailed from FIU, with Maha Gouda taking first place with a mark of 344.00. Mandy Song produced a 341.10 to rank second. Florida Atlantic’s Alicia Mora Herencia was third at 336.25.
 
FIU closed the day’s action with a first place showing in the 400-medley relay with a score of 3:37.51.  Julia Miranda, Sara Gyertyanffy, Kelsie Campbell and Jasmine Nocentini combined for the victory.  Rice finished second, followed by Marshall.

The 2021 C-USA Swimming and Diving Championships will resume Friday, February 26, with prelims starting at 10:30 a.m. ET. Day three finals will begin at 6 p.m. ET streamed live for free on CUSA.tv.
