Spizzirri named Big 12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week

Sophomore Eliot Spizzirri earns his second conference weekly honor of the season and of his career after helping lead the Longhorns to a 4-3 win at Tulane.

Austin – Texas Men's Tennis sophomore Eliot Spizzirri has been named Big 12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 28, the conference announced Wednesday.

It marks Spizzirri's second conference weekly honor of the season and of his career after he also earned the honor for the week that ended Jan. 24.

Spizzirri helped lead Texas to a 4-3 win in its first true road dual match of the season against Tulane in New Orleans on Saturday. He played No. 1 singles for just the third time in his career after only previously doing so in a doubleheader against Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi three weeks ago. He earned his second-straight win over a ranked opponent in No. 40 Hamish Stewart to give the Longhorns a 3-2 lead in the match. Prior that, he helped Texas win the doubles point by pairing with Siem Woldeab at No. 1 for a 6-2 win over Stewart and Ewan Moore. Although Stewart and Moore are not currently ranked in doubles, they are both Top 60 singles players. Spizzirri is now 9-2 in dual match singles play and 16-3 overall this season, along with being 7-3 in dual match doubles play and 14-8 overall this season.

Spizzirri and the Longhorns continue on the road for their next three matches, starting with a trip to Oklahoma for non-conference matches at No. 14 Oklahoma State on March 5 and Oklahoma on March 7, followed by a visit to Rice in Houston on March 12.
