MBB: C-USA Announces All-Academic Team

DALLAS – Conference USA continues its commitment to excellence on the court and in the classroom as five student-athletes were selected to the 2021 C-USA Men’s Basketball All-Academic Team. Marshall’s Jarrod West headlines the 2021 roster, posting his second consecutive nod.

West, who earned his undergraduate degree in business management, holds a 3.69 grade-point average (GPA) in pursuit of his MBA. The three-time C-USA Academic Honor Roll selection ranks 10th in the country this season with 6.3 assists per game and 12th with 2.56 steals per game. His 13.2 points per game is good for second on the Thundering Herd roster and his 113 total assists ranks first in C-USA.

Rice sophomore Max Fiedler compiled a near-perfect 3.98 GPA as a mathematical economic analysis major. The only Owl to start all 24 games this campaign, Fiedler leads the team in field goal percentage (68.7%) and rebounds per game with 8.54. His rebound mark puts him at second in the league. He is currently averaging 10.6 points per game in his second collegiate season.

With an unblemished 4.0 GPA in construction management, Trey Jemison puts in the work on and off the court for UAB. The junior stands at 17th in the country with 55 total blocks and is third in C-USA with 2.20 per game. The Birmingham, Alabama, product posted a career-high six blocked shots against Alcorn State in November, tying the second highest total in a single game in the conference this season.

Erik Czumbel, a sophomore at UTSA, penned a 3.95 GPA while majoring in kinesiology. The Verona, Italy, native is a two-time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll member and has received the league’s Commissioner’s Academic Medal twice. This season, he is averaging 4.0 points per game and 2.1 rebounds per game. In seven starts, he has dished out 36 assists and tallied 13 steals. 

Rounding out this year’s all-academic squad is WKU’s Charles Bassey, who has performed at a high level athletically and academically. The junior posted a 3.57 GPA majoring in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in health. The Lagos, Nigeria, product rates fourth in the NCAA with 66 blocked shots and fifth with 247 rebounds, while averaging 17.8 points per game. His six C-USA Player of the Week awards this season ties the league record and he was named a finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year award.
