SLATE: Kansas State retires TCU again

One year ago today, Kansas State won the last game of the Big 12 season as they knocked off TCU in the opening round of the Big 12 men’s basketball tournament. The following morning, the world turned upside down.

History repeated itself last night as the Cats blitzed TCU 71-50 in the first round, as recounted by our own Luke Sobba. Kellis Robinett has some post-game thoughts at the Eagle, while our pal Melissa Treibwasser reports on the carnage from the Frog perspective over at Frogs O’ War.

Today, after Oklahoma State and West Virginia meet in the 4/5 game, K-State will attempt to pull off their greatest feat of the 2020-21 season: upsetting Baylor. That’s scheduled for 1:30 this afternoon on ESPN proper. The evening session features Kansas/Oklahoma and Texas/Texas Tech.

As for the women, they’ll take the court at 8:00 tonight in the late game at Municipal Auditorium against seventh seed Texas Tech, live on ESPN+. TCU takes on Kansas in the early contest. The Big 12 announced their season awards yesterday, and K-State will be taking the court with two-time first-team All-Big 12 center Ayoka Lee. Christianna Carr also earned honorable mention.

Baseball

The BatCats put on a clinic yesterday at Tointon in a 10-0 rout of South Dakota State. K-State committed zero errors, Caleb Littlejim struck out eight in only four innings of work, the bullpen combined for another eight strikeouts in five innings of scoreless relief, and the Jackrabbits only managed three hits on the day. The only icky thing from the pitching staff or the defense: they gave up seven walks. But solid defense and timely third strikes prevented any damage.

Offensively, the BatCats teed off again. In the first, Austin Garrett homered to get the Cats on the board, and later in the inning two unearned runs scored on a Daniel Carinci single. In the second, K-State scored three more runs, two as a result of a throwing error and a wild pitch, the third on a Nick Goodwin RBI single.

Dylan Phillips added a seventh run in the third on a solo homer, and then the Jackrabbits gifted K-State two more runs on a wild pitch, a throwing error, and an RBI single from Kamron Willman. The final run of the game came in the sixth when Phillips jacked his second bomb of the day.

South Dakota State falls to 5-7, while the BatCats improve to 8-4 and erase the taste of the weekend debacle against Eastern Illinois. K-State, now with four players sporting supra-1.000 OPS marks (Phillips, Goodwin, Willman, and Zach Kokoska), will now head to Houston for a three-day four-game trip. They’ll take on Northern Illinois on Friday and again on Saturday morning; Saturday evening they’ll meet Rice, and play them again on Sunday. The two meetings with Rice constitute K-State’s first true road games of the 2021 campaign.

Football

Either Wyatt Hubert is fooling himself, the Chiefs intend to draft him, or they’re desperately hoping nobody else does. Hubert revealed, in the wake of his pro day workout on Tuesday, that he’s been talking to the Chiefs a lot lately and he’s got more meetings scheduled with them this weekend.
