Cougars return to action against crosstown Owls

HOUSTON – After over two weeks off from competition, the Houston soccer team welcomes Rice to the Carl Lewis International Complex on Thursday, March 11, at 5 p.m.

The two teams held an exhibition at the end of January, at Rice, where the Cougars were propelled by a Mia Brascia goal to a 1-0 victory. Brascia's 15th minute game-winner was one of six shots on goal for the Cougars' offense in that game.

This regular season match, originally scheduled for March 3, was delayed due to COVID-19 issues within the Houston soccer team.

Due to COVID-19 protocols outlined by Houston Athletics, attendance for the 2021 season will be pass-list only and limited to the student-athletes and coaches of the home and visiting teams. Per University of Houston all those attending are required to wear face coverings.

BRINGING HOME THE AWARDS

Goalkeeper Salma Ghazal was named to The American Athletic Conference Honor Roll the week of for her four-save shutout performance against UTSA. The Sugar Land, Texas, native has been a steady presence in net for the squad with six saves on the season since transferring from Texas Southern.

Before the season even began, senior forward Jazmin Grant was named to the Preseason All-American Athletic Conference Team. That was the second time Grant had received the honor after first being honored in 2018.

OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER

As a team, the Cougars have outscored their opponents 11-2 this season. The ball movement has been humming to achieve that total with eight assists on those 11 goals. By putting the pressure on their foes, Houston has earned 23 corner kicks through only five games.

Individually, the program is led offensively by a quartet of student-athletes with two goals: Mia Brascia, Zionah Browne, Natalie Anderson, and CaLeigha Callahan. Brascia and Browne each has tallied an assist as well, so they lead the squad with five points.
