Houston visits San Marcos for three-game set

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Houston Baseball opens a three-game series at Texas State on Friday with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. from Bobcat Ballpark. Saturday's middle game begins at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday's finale starts at 1 p.m.
 
Houston (8-4) opened its four-game road trip with a 13-7 victory at Incarnate Word on Wednesday. The Cougars scored five runs in two different frames highlighted by a three-run home run from Ryan Hernandez.
 
Texas State (6-8) is riding a two-game win streak, defeating Rice, 9-1, at Minute Maid Park on Sunday and downing No. 9 TCU, 11-1 in seven innings on Tuesday. The Bobcats lead the Sun Belt in doubles (27) and are third in the league in hits (111) and runs (75).

Houston and Texas State have met 52 times previously in a series that began in 1984. The Cougars lead the all-time series 32-20. The series is tied 6-6 in San Marcos. Houston last visited Texas State for a midweek contest on Feb. 25, 2015. The Cougars last played a three-game series at Texas State, Feb. 22-24, 2013, taking 2-of-3.
 
Houston pitching has been stellar early, leading the AAC in ERA (3.06) and ranks second in WHIP (0.76). The Cougars have allowed three-or-fewer earned runs in eight of 12 contests. Houston has held opponents to a .229 average (35-for-153) with runners and .240 (31-for-129) with two outs. Over the last eight games, Houston pitching has posted a 2.71 ERA and .224 opponent average.
 
Houston has quietly impressed defensively. The Cougars have posted a .979 fielding percentage, a mark that ranks third in the American Athletic Conference. Since committing a combined six errors on Opening Weekend, the Cougars have committed just four in the last nine contests for a .989 fielding percentage.
