Ilgiz Captures Big 12 Player of the Week Honor

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech men's tennis senior Ilgiz Valiev has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. This is the first time that the number 93 nationally ranked and Ufa, Russia native has received the honor. 

Since February 6th, Valiev is undefeated in singles play and 4-2 in doubles (with one unfinished match)His streak has helped the Red Raiders (8-2) to wins over No. 30 Tulane (def. #53 Ewan Moore 6-0, 6-3) No. 35 San Diego (def. Nico Borter 6-4, 6-3) and No. 26 Oklahoma.   

"Ilgiz has been playing consistent great tennis in all phases of the game." Texas Tech head coach Danny Whitehead said. "He deserves recognition for it. He looks forward to the tough competition and it has showed when he plays against the toughest opponents"

Valiev's singles record is currently sits at 8-1 as the Red Raiders are back in action this weekend at 62nd Ralph O'Connor Rice Invitational.
