Turati named Big 12 Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

UT senior went 4-0 in singles and doubles to lead the Longhorns to a pair of wins against ranked foes last weekend.

AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas senior Anna Turati has been named the Big 12 Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. Turati earned her third career weekly conference honor, as she previously claimed the accolade on April 9, 2019 and Jan. 14, 2020.

Turati became the third UT player to claim Big 12 Player of the Week honors this season. Freshman Peyton Stearns garnered the award on Feb. 2, and freshman Kylie Collins received the accolade on Feb. 9.

Turati paced the No. 2 Longhorns to a pair of impressive dual-match sweeps against ranked opponents this week by posting a 4-0 overall mark (2-0 singles, 2-0 doubles).

In Saturday's 4-0 home win against No. 27 Rice, she paired with Fernanda Labraña on court 2 in doubles to claim a 7-5 win against Michaela Haet and Linda Huang to clinch the doubles point for the Longhorns. She returned in singles and registered a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory on court 2 over Anna Bowtell.

During Sunday's 7-0 sweep against No. 7 Baylor which solidified Texas at the top of the Big 12 standings, Turati again teamed with Labraña on court 2 in doubles to earn a 6-2 win against Livia Kraus and Alicia Herrero-Linana that clinched the doubles point for UT. Turati then capped her weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court 2 over Jessica Hinojosa that clinched the overall dual-match win for the Longhorns.

On the year, Turati and Labraña are a perfect 11-0 in dual-match doubles play and ranked No. 80 in the latest ITA national doubles rankings. Turati, No. 26 in the ITA national singles rankings, is 13-2 in dual-match singles action, including a perfect 5-0 in Big 12 play.

No. 2 Texas (16-1) returns to action when it hosts Texas State later today (Tuesday, March 30). First serve is set for 2 p.m. Central at the Texas Tennis Center.
