After earning a degree in math from Rice University, Matthew Broussard started attending some open mic nights around Houston before deciding to pursue comedy as his career — sometimes to the chagrin of his parents.

But he's done quite well, appearing on Comedy Central, performing on late night talk shows, and last month shooting a guest appearance on the Amazon original series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, for the show's upcoming season.

In the audio above, Broussard tells Houston Matters producer Michael Hagerty how he uses that math degree in his comedy, how his time in Houston shaped what he does on stage, and about the importance of making fun of his own appearance at the top of his sets.
