TEN: 2021 All-Academic Teams Announced

DALLAS – Twelve Conference USA men’s and women’s tennis student-athletes were tabbed to the 2021 C-USA Tennis All-Academic Teams, announced by the league on Tuesday. Three student-athletes are repeat selections.

The men’s side saw three repeat honorees including Sumit Sarkar of Rice. The senior statistics major holds a 3.58 grade-point average (GPA). This season, the 2019 C-USA Player of the Year is playing at the first line for the third straight season. Sarkar is a two-time All-Conference performer and is also a Rice University Honor Athlete, C-USA Academic Honor Roll recipient, as well as ITA Scholar Athlete.
 
Middle Tennessee led the men’s honorees with four including repeat honorees – Tom Moonen and Max Rauch. Moonen has maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA in finance. The graduate student has competed primarily at the No. 1 singles position on the league’s top ranked team. Moonen is a four time ITA Scholar Athlete, C-USA Academic Medal recipient and 2020 ITA Ohio Valley Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship winner. Rauch, an aerospace, mathematics and engineering technology major, posted a 3.925 GPA. The Heidelberg, Germany, product is a four-time ITA Scholar Athlete award winner and holds a 9-3 singles record heading into the championship. Pavel Motl and Francisco Rocha are two of the top ranked players in the league. Motl is a junior with a 3.9 GPA, a C-USA Academic Medal recipient and currently ranked No. 77 in doubles heading into the league championship. Rocha is the league’s top ranked player at No. 37 with a 4.0 GPA in economics. An ITA Scholar Athlete and C-USA Academic medalist, he has compiled an 11-4 singles record heading into the championship.
 
Florida Atlantic’s Filip Krolo makes his first appearance on the team in 2021. Krolo boasts a 4.0 GPA as an International Business major. The sophomore competed in all 13 matches for the Owls this season at No. 2/3 singles and No. 1 doubles. He is also a two-time member of the FAU President’s List.
 
The women’s all-academic team features two student-athletes from Charlotte – Kaavya Sawhney and Ruxi Schech. Sawhney is a sophomore with a 3.925 GPA, leads the team in singles wins and has also earned several ITA, C-USA and Charlotte academic honors. Also a sophomore, Schech has compiled a 3.958 GPA while also appearing in the top 100 of the ITA singles rankings this season. Schech has also received ITA, C-USA and Charlotte academic honors while helping the 49ers to significant program wins and national rankings this season.
 
Michaela Haet, a sport management major from Rice, holds a 3.739 GPA. The senior has compiled a winning record in singles going into the league championship. The 2019 C-USA Player of the Year is a  three-time ITA All-Academic Individual Award winner, four-time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient and a 2021 Rice Honor Athlete.
 
Southern Miss sophomore Sarah Medik posted a 4.0 GPA while majoring in International Business. The 2020 all-freshman honoree contributed key victories to the Golden Eagles this season, including a C-USA Athlete of the Week performance award.
 
Old Dominion’s Holly Hutchinson has maintained a 3.95 GPA as a digital communication media studies major. The career No. 1 singles player for the Monarchs has spent most of this season in the national rankings with the team appearing in the Top 50 as well. The former C-USA Player of the Year has also earned the league’s Academic Medal three times, as well as appeared on the Dean’s List at ODU each semester. She is also an ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award Winner for the Atlantic region.
 
The final honoree of the 2021 team is FIU junior Kamila Umarova. The junior boasts a3.95 GPA as an Accounting major. Umarova has helped lead the Panthers to an undefeated mark and appearance in the top 50 ITA team rankings going into the league championship. An all-conference honoree, she has posted an undefeated mark in singles this season while appearing on the FIU President’s List every term.
