UAB Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Rice

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team split its doubleheader with Rice on Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field. The Blazers won the first game, 2-1, in walk-off fashion. Rice took the final game of the day, 7-0.
 
The Blazers move to 16-32, 9-18 C-USA on the season, while Rice goes to 20-27-1, 8-18-1 C-USA.
 
GAME ONE – UAB 2, RICE 1
 
In a pitcher's duel in game one, the Blazers came away with the 2-1 win. Evan Ingram (1-3) picked up his first career win after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout.
 
In the first inning, Austin Bulman scored Cade Edwards in from third on a sacrifice fly out to left for the 1-0 lead.
 
Blaine Smith sent a double to center field and advanced home on a throwing error by the second baseman to tie the game at one in the third.
 
Back-to-back singles by Caleb Floyd and John Marc Mullins put runners on the corners with no outs in the seventh. Thomas Johnston came in to pinch-hit and sent the walk-off to center to bring in pinch runner Darryl Buggs from third for the 2-1 win.
 
GAME TWO – UAB 0, RICE 7
 
Chandler Simpson picked up his team-leading 22nd stolen base, in addition to going 2-for-3 in the contest. Mullins also went 2-for-3 in the game.
 
Rice opened up the scoring in the top of the first when Edwards reached on an error. Braden Comeaux registered a single to drive in the run. Bradley Gneiting sent a double to score Comeaux from first for the 2-0 advantage.
 
The Owls hit back-to-back-to-back singles with one out in the second inning to drive in a run. Back-to-back walks brought in an insurance run to go up, 4-0.
 
The Blazers trailed by five after five innings when Rice scored a run in the fifth. Rice added one run in the sixth and one in the seventh for the final tally of 7-0.
 
The final home game of the season and series finale is Sunday at Young Memorial Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Check the UAB baseball page for all the latest updates to the schedule.

BASEBALL AT YOUNG MEMORIAL FIELD

Fans, including Gold Card holders and students, will not be permitted to attend home baseball games played at Young Memorial Field. Attendees will be limited to the player pass list and limited premium spaces.
 
Attendees will be asked to practice social distancing and wear a mask at all times per state and county ordinance.
