Blazers Drop Series Finale to Rice

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team fell in the series finale, 10-5, versus Rice on Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
 
Zack Davis and Blaine Smith led the Blazers at the plate, both recording two hits in the contest. Austin Bohannon (0-5) picked up the loss, while Rice's Guy Garibay earned his second win of the season.
 
Jess Davis and Chandler Simpson picked up stolen bases 21 and 23, respectively, of the season. With the steal, J. Davis moves into fifth all-time in program history in career stolen bases.
 
After two scoreless innings to begin the game, Rice (21-27-1, 9-18-1 C-USA) broke through with a run in the top of the third. Will Karp hit a single to score Braden Comeaux from third to go up 1-0.
 
Thomas Johns led off the bottom of the third with a double to center. Johns advanced to third on a fielder's choice and was brought home on a J. Davis single to tie it up at one.
 
Rice plated five runs in the fifth to retake the lead, 6-1.
 
UAB (16-33, 9-19 C-USA) brought in a run in the bottom of the fifth on a leadoff double by Smith. He was brought in on a Simpson groundout to cut the Owl's lead to 6-2.
 
In the sixth, Karp hit a sacrifice fly with bases loaded to score Cade Edwards from third. In the bottom of the inning, the Blazers added a run on a single by Smith to bring in Z. Davis from second.
 
Rice added to its lead with three runs in the seventh for the 10-3 advantage.
 
Z. Davis hit a two RBI double down the right field line to drive in J. Davis and Simpson, cutting the Owl's lead in half, 10-5, the eventual finally tally.
 
The Blazers hit the road to Huntington, W.Va. for the final conference trip of the season to face Marshall on May 14-16. Check the UAB baseball page for all the latest updates to the schedule.
