UT Austin Ranks Highly Among U.S. Public Universities in Latest Global Ranking

AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas at Austin is the No. 6 public university in the U.S. and No. 29 among publics and privates in the 2021 edition of the QS World University Rankings.

The rankings, compiled by higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds, list the top 1,000 universities around the world based on a variety of factors including research, learning experience, diversity and internationalization, and employability.

Based on these factors, UT Austin ranked No. 71 worldwide. The university also earned high national rankings in individual disciplines, ranking No. 2 in petroleum engineering and No. 4 in communication and media studies. UT also placed in the top 20 for other academic subjects, ranking No. 15 in library and information management and No. 20 in civil and structural engineering.

Other Texas universities were featured in the rankings. Among U.S. public and private universities, Rice University ranked No. 23, Texas A&M No. 64 and The University of Texas at Dallas No. 83.

UT Austin’s excellence has been recognized by other recent rankings, including in U.S. News & World Report. Last year, it ranked UT Austin No. 38 in the world in its Best Global Universities ranking. Five specialty programs ranked No. 1, and 48 schools and specialties ranked among the nation’s top 10. The university also received national recognition through the prestigious Seal of Excelencia for committing to Latino student success.
