All the U.S. Colleges Requiring COVID Vaccines to Return to Campus in the Fall, So Far

An increasing number of U.S. colleges are requiring students to be immunized against the coronavirus in a bid for some sense of normalcy to return to campuses next semester.

Professor Martin Andersen, an economist at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, revealed why vaccination requirements are likely to be particularly important in stemming the COVID-19 pandemic.

He told Newsweek: "The progress that we have made over the past few months in fighting the pandemic is due to a reduction in the number of people who are susceptible to infection due to prior infection or vaccination.

"Because of the nature of college life—many repeated interactions—stemming COVID-19 outbreaks on college campuses will be more difficult than in the rest of the community.

"Essentially the threshold for herd immunity is higher on college campuses than in the community because students have more frequent and prolonged physical interactions.

"As a result, college campuses could easily become nexuses of new outbreaks if they are bringing together students from areas with current outbreaks of COVID-19.

"Worse still is how some students will come from areas with relatively few cases, become ill on campus and bringing the virus home with them upon their return."

Lynn Pasquerella, President of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, added individual institutions or state systems being responsible for vaccination decisions may have resulted in inconsistencies to the U.S. national program.

She told Newsweek: "In many instances, campus leaders were constrained by state policies prohibiting vaccine mandates or COVID passports, documenting proof of vaccination.

"In other cases, decisions were based on the size and nature of the institution and the population served."
