WSOC: Huskies Drop Opener to North Texas

HBU falls to the CUSA power at home, 2-0

HOUSTON – HBU women's soccer fell in the team's delayed season-opener on Sunday evening at Sorrels Field, dropping a 2-0 decision to visiting North Texas.

The Huskies (0-1), in their first game under new head coach Chris Dodd after Friday's originally scheduled opener against SMU was canceled, allowed single goals in each half to the Mean Green (2-0). UNT jumped ahead in the fourth minute with Taylor Tufts finding the net from in front of the goal. HBU senior Jessica Nevils put the Huskies' only attempt on goal in the first half less than two minutes later.

In the second half, Tufts found Brooke Lampe in front of goal on a corner kick with Lampe putting the ball into the net at the 63:01 mark for the final 2-0 score. Noor Abukishk nearly pulled the Huskies within one in the 69th minute from outside the 18-yard box but her shot hit off the near post. The Huskies also earned a PK with just under five minutes left on the clock but Avery Cortez's attempt missed just to the left.

In goal, Karla Ramirez finished with five saves for the Huskies. North Texas held an 18-8 advantage in shots with seven attempts on goal to HBU's two.

"We are happy to get this game under our belt and see the girls play after a hard preseason camp," said Dodd. "There were a lot of positive moments to take away from the game and I am encouraged by our play moving forward. Overall, it was a full team effort and great to see everyone embrace their role. I am really looking forward to the games next weekend against some cross-town rivals."

HBU will return to action at Sorrels Field on Friday, Aug. 27 vs. the Rice Owls at 7:00 p.m. before heading across town to face Houston on Sunday, Aug. 29, evening.
