Cougars start slate with Nov. 6 exhibition vs. Montana Tech; Meet Hofstra in regular-season opener on Nov. 9

HOUSTON – Eight home games inside the Fertitta Center with a Nov. 6 exhibition against Montana Tech highlight the University of Houston Men's Basketball 2021-22 non-conference schedule.

Seven lettermen and two starters return from last season's squad which posted a 28-4 record, advanced to the sixth NCAA Tournament Final Four in school history and captured the American Athletic Conference Tournament championship.

In 2020-21, the Cougars posted a perfect 15-0 home record inside the Fertitta Center and have won their last 25 home games. That ranks as the fourth longest home winning streak in the nation, entering the 2021-22 campaign.

The season begins with a Nov. 6 exhibition against Montana Tech, where Coach Kelvin Sampson began his award-winning head coaching career during the1981-82 season.

From there, the home schedule continues against Hofstra (Nov. 9) in the Cougars' regular-season opener. It will be the first meeting against the Pride in school history.

The Cougars then take on crosstown-rival Rice (Nov. 12) before facing Virginia (Nov. 16). The game against the Cavaliers features two of the nation's Top-Three winningest teams since 2017-18 with the Cougars (111) and Virginia (107) trailing only Gonzaga (127).

Houston then competes at the Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Nov. 22-24 inside the Lahaina Civic Center in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. The Cougars open that prestigious tournament against Butler on Nov. 22 and will face the winner-loser of Texas A&M-Wisconsin on Nov. 23 before closing out the event on Nov. 24.

The Cougars close out the month against Northwestern State on Nov. 30 inside the Fertitta Center.

Houston opens the month of December against Bryant on Dec. 3 inside Fertitta Center in the first meeting between the schools with a Dec. 6 showdown following against Alcorn State.

After a Dec. 11 road contest at Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the Cougars meet Oklahoma State on Dec. 18 inside Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, in the Hoop Hype XL | College Basketball Showcase. Houston then closes out its non-conference slate when it plays host to Texas State on Dec. 22 inside the Fertitta Center.

The Cougars' American Athletic Conference schedule as well as game times and broadcasting networks for all games will be announced at a later date.
