WSOC: August 24 Players of the Week

DALLAS – WKU’s Katie Erwin, who posted seven points in two matches for the Lady Toppers, Rice’s Caleigh Boeckx, who helped lead the Owls on both ends of the field in a pair of victories, and Rice’s Bella Killgore, who posted two shutouts for the Owls, earned the first 2021 Conference USA Women’s Soccer Player of the Week honors, presented by Surf & Turf Golf.

Erwin was selected as Offensive Player of the Week, Boeckx earned Defensive Player of the Week honors and Killgore was named C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week.

C-USA Offensive Player of the Week – Katie Erwin, WKU, Jr., Louisville, Ky.
Erwin scored two goals and added three assists over two games in victories over Austin Peay and Union (Tenn.). The junior from Louisville, Kentucky became the 13th WKU player in history to have a five-point game as she scored a goal and had two assists against Union. Erwin played a part in all five goals the Lady Toppers have scored so far this season.

C-USA Defensive Player of the Week – Caleigh Boeckx, Rice, Jr., Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Boeckx helped lead the Owls both offensively and defensively in a pair of shutouts to open the season. In the season opening 4-0 victory over Sam Houston State, she helped hold SHSU to just six total shots, including none on goal, while she recorded her first career assist. The Calgary, Alberta native followed that by scoring the second goal in a 2-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin, once again keeping the opposition off the scoreboard. Her performance helped the Owls record back-to-back shutouts to open the season for the first time in school history.

C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week – Bella Killgore, Rice, Jr., Houston, Texas
Killgore picked up where she left off last year, helping No. 16 Rice open the season with a pair of victories. In the season opening 4-0 victory over Sam Houston State, she faced six shots in the game. She followed that by facing 14 shots and making eight saves in a 2-0 victory over WAC Southwest Division favorite Stephen F. Austin, as she became the first goalkeeper in Rice history to open the season with a pair of shutouts. With her 15th and 16th career shutout, the junior from Houston, Texas became the third goalkeeper in school history with at least 15 solo shutouts.
