Two Cougars receive weekly conference honors

HOUSTON – Houston Soccer's Mikaela Gracia was named Goalkeeper of the Week, The American Athletic Conference announced on Monday.

The redshirt freshman keeper has recorded three clean sheets in a row with her first against Houston Baptist. She has tallied close to 500 minutes in the net with a season high of 110 against Stephen F. Austin when the match went into double overtime.

"Mika came up with some timely saves over the weekend. She was brave and had to put her body on the line multiple times," said Head Coach Diego Bocanegra.

Gracia has recorded 15 saves in five matches with Louisiana Lafayette testing her with seven on Sunday. Her incredible performance ensured that the Ragin' Cajuns did not get a point on the scoreboard. In her total of 37 shots faced so far this season, she has only allowed five to make it past her. Gracia has proved to be effective in the net and a vital player for the Cougars thus far.

Fellow redshirt-freshman Nadia Kamassah also earned weekly honors as an honorable mention on The American Honor Roll. Kamassah has scored two game-winning goals in the last two matches against Lamar and Louisiana Lafayette, which were also her two starting lineup appearances this season.

"Nadia found her way into the starting lineup and took advantage of her opportunity," stated Bocanegra. "She has a nose for the goal and creates her own luck by her hard work."
