Linebacker blocked pair of punts at Rice

HOUSTON – Houston Football redshirt freshman Mannie Nunnery has been named The American's Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Nunnery blocked two punts in Houston's 44-7 win at Rice on Saturday, helping the Cougars to their sixth consecutive win in the cross-town rivalry. He also added two tackles.

Nunnery's blocks occurred on back-to-back Rice punts. After deflecting a 37-yard punt, the Pearland, Texas, native broke through, stuffing Rice punter Charlie Mendes at the Owls' own 29-yard line. Two plays later, Houston found the end zone.

Houston defensive lineman Logan Hall was recognized on the league's weekly honor roll for his efforts against Rice. The junior contributed a team-best eight tackles alongside 2.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks.

In the win, Houston held Rice to 212 total yards, the fewest by an opponent since Sept. 24, 2016. Rice's seven points and 86 passing yards each marked the fewest by an opponent in the Dana Holgorsen era (2019-present).

Houston returns to action against Grambling at TDECU Stadium at 6 p.m. Saturday as part of the Celebration of 75 years of Houston Athletics. To purchase tickets, fans can visit UHCougars.com/tickets or call 713 GO COOGS (462-6647) during regular business hours.
