Culley 2-0 in debuts In Houston | Daily Brew

Okay, we're deep into Week 2 and I should stop writing about Week 1. But as Colombo used to say on TV right before he walked out the door, "one more thing…"

(Kids, Colombo was a great 70s TV show about a private detective, or was he a cop? I don't remember. I just crammed the reference in there)

Editor's Note: Vandermeer, the dated references are one thing but not even knowing that Colombo was a homicide detective is unacceptable.

I bet David Culley would get the reference.

Anyway, Culley won his Houston debut as a head coach on Sunday. Well, he also won his debut as a starting college quarterback in Houston 46 years ago. That's right. The Vanderbilt Commodores traveled to Houston to play Rice on September 20, 1975. Rice Stadium was a well-known facility, having hosted a Super Bowl just 20 months prior.

Tommy Kramer, who would play 14 seasons in the NFL, was the Owls' QB. "We won the ballgame 9-6, which means I didn't get us into the end zone but I didn't get us beat." Culley told us on his Texans Radio Show (Mondays 5 p.m., Sports Radio 610).

After Culley finished up at Vanderbilt, he'd begin his coaching career mentoring running backs at Austin Peay, about an hour away from Nashville.

Game 2 in his head coaching career is Sunday at noon in Cleveland (12 p.m. Kickoff on Sports Radio 610, The Bull 100.3 FM and KHOU CBS).

Join us at home for Thursday Night Football at NRG Stadium on September 23 at 7:20 p.m. as the Texans take on the Panthers. Click here for tickets.
