Tech's Skogen takes second at Maridoe Invitational

CARROLLTON — Texas Tech golfer Baard Skogen finished runner-up in the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational on Wednesday, losing in a playoff to Arizona State's Cameron Sisk.

Both players finished 54 holes at Maridoe Golf Club at 7 under par, one shot better than Texas A&M's Sam Bennett and Oklahoma's Chris Gotterup. Then Skogen birdied the first hole of the playoff, No. 18, and Sisk made par.

Skogen opened with a 1-over 73, then shot back-to-back rounds of 4-under 68.

Tech finished 9-over and fourth in the team standings behind Oklahoma, Texas and Arizona State. OU shot 3-under, UT 2-under and ASU 2-over in a 15-team field.

Tech's Garrett Martin (77-70-74) tied for 20th. Also playing for the Red Raiders were Ludvig Aberg (75-76-72), Kyle Hogan (78-76-70) and Calum Scott (74-81-84).

Tech volleyball

Texas Tech is scheduled for three matches in the next two days at the Green Wave Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama, its last non-conference action before Big 12 play begins. 

Tulane is the tournament host, but the event was moved from New Orleans after Hurricane Ida. On Friday, Tech (7-3) takes on Alabama-Birmingham (3-4) at 12:30 p.m. and Tulane (6-3) at 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Tech faces Sam Houston State (6-3) at 11 a.m.

The Red Raiders are coming off a split last week at the Buffs Invitational, losing to host Colorado in four sets and sweeping San Jose State in three.

Tech men's tennis

Texas Tech continues its fall season Friday, Saturday and Sunday at The Lakes Collegiate Invitational hosted by SMU at The Lakes Tennis Club in Frisco.

Oklahoma and Rice also have players in the event. Each player will have three singles and three doubles matches.

The Red Raiders opened up last week at the Racquet Club Invitational in Midland with Dimitrios Azoidis reaching the singles final and making the semifinals in doubles with Ilgiz Valiev. Valiev won two singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals.

LCU volleyball

Lubbock Christian University opens its home and Lone Star Conference schedules by hosting Arkansas-Fort Smith at 6 p.m. Friday and Oklahoma Christian at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rip Griffin Center.

The Lady Chaps (4-4) went 1-3 last week at the Mountain Lion Classic in Colorado Springs, Colorado, two of the losses coming to ranked teams. Freshman outside hitter Aaliyah Gray from Coronado made the all-tournament team with 48 kills in four matches.

Gray has 86 kills for the season, followed by Hannah Froeschl with 76 and Sage Chain with 73. Jalee Sims has 224 assists and 93 digs, and Kendall Mahaney leads LCU in digs with 133.

UAFS (5-3) was picked fifth out of 18 teams in the preseason Lone Star Conference poll. Oklahoma Christian (4-4) was picked 12th and LCU 14th.

LCU women's soccer

Lubbock Christian University will put its 3-0 record on the line when the Lady Chaps visit Colorado Christian for a match at 1 p.m. CDT Friday in Lakewood, Colorado.

LCU has beaten New Mexico Highlands, Adams State and Colorado State-Pueblo, outscoring the three by a combined 9-2. Colorado Christian is 1-2-1.

Makenna Pate and Frenship graduate Allison Scott lead the Lady Chaps with six points apiece, Pate via three goals and Scott on two goals and two assists. Lubbock-Cooper grad Kenley Blevins has four points on a goal and two assists.

LCU men's soccer

Lubbock Christian University's two home matches scheduled for Thursday and Saturday have been canceled because of COVID-19 protocols, LCU announced Wednesday.

The LCU matches Thursday against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and Saturday against Saint Martin's won't be rescheduled, LCU said. The Chaps are 2-2.

Three other teams still traveled to Lubbock for neutral-site matches.

Saint Martin's (1-3) was scheduled to take on Northeastern State (1-3) on Thursday night on the LCU field and UC-Colorado Springs (1-1-1) at 8 p.m. Friday. Northeastern State and UCCS square off at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Saint Martin's is located in Lacey, Washington, and Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
