The Ion is accepting artist proposals for window displays in Downtown Houston.

In 2019, the City of Houston and Rice University embarked on a journey to transform the historic Sears building into The Ion, a 16-acre innovation district Downtown.

The 266,000-square-foot building serves as a destination for the city’s entrepreneurs, academic and creative incubators. The hub includes commercial office and event spaces, along with food and beverage offerings. In an effort to support the city’s emerging art scene, The Ion issued a call for local artists to submit ideas for site-specific window installations that will rotate every six months.

“As a nexus for creativity of many different kinds, The Ion welcomes Houston’s talented artists to tap into their unique skill sets and diverse backgrounds to submit inventive proposals that will ultimately comprise two different art installations,” says Artistic Consultant Piper Faust in a statement. Faust hopes that the installations will serve as a daily inspiration for the surrounding community.

Two artists/teams will be selected to create installations on both Fannin and Main Streets, each of which will be on view from February-August 2022.

The commission budget is $20,000 per window display that will cover artist’s fees, from design to insurance, travel and other financial needs. Local artists over the age of 18 who work in all media are welcome to apply. Applicants must reside and work in the Greater Houston Area, which encompasses Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Brazoria, Galveston, Liberty, Waller, Chambers and Austin counties.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, October 1, 5:00 pm CST.
