Each week Dave Campbell’s Texas Football staff gives their power rankings of the sub-FBS college football teams in Texas.

Note: Teams are measured against the overall strength of their conference.

  1. Sam Houston (3-0) Last Week: 1 - The Bearkats handled business at No. 24 Central Arkansas last week and turn their focus to rivalry week against SFA this week.

  2. Mary Hardin-Baylor (4-0) Last Week: 2 - The offense got rolling in the second half and the Cru defense shut down rival Hardin-Simmons for a big win. UMHB should have a few weeks before facing another challenge.

  3. UIW (3-1) Last Week: 6 - How did the Cardinals follow up their first win over an FBS program? With a 31-0 thrashing of McNeese State. This team is a threat in the Southland Conference.

  4. Trinity Valley (4-0) Last Week: 7 - The TVCC defense held the nation’s best passing attack to 50 yards in the first half of a 31-23 win over a solid Tyler squad and jump into the top 5 as a result.

  5. Midwestern State (4-0) Last Week: 5 - I imagine the MSU coaching staff is stressing focus and finishing this week after allowing Eastern New Mexico to nearly complete the comeback.

  6. Hardin-Simmons (3-1) Last Week: 4 - The Cowboys have been so close to defeating UMHB each of their last three meetings. HSU can focus on that later because they still have work left in this season.

  7. Kilgore (3-1) Last Week: 3 - The Rangers’ national title hopes aren’t over but they are greatly diminished following a road loss to No. 12 New Mexico Military Institute.

  8. Trinity (2-0) Last Week: 8 - The Tigers scheduled a bye week before meeting Southern Athletic Association favorite Berry this week. Let’s hope the extra rest and preparation pay off.

  9. SFA (3-1) Last Week: 9 - What will SFA coach Colby Carthel do on social media this week? We can’t wait to find out. Carthel has instilled energy back into this fantastic rivalry and the ‘Jacks have a true shot at the upset this year.

  10. Howard Payne (4-0) Last Week: 13 - It is conceivable for HPU to be 7-0 and in the discussion for the postseason when the Yellow Jackets host Hardin-Simmons the night before Halloween.

  11. Texas A&M-Commerce (2-2) Last Week: 10 - The Lions needed a win after two heartbreaking losses. TAMU-Commerce coasted to a 35-10 victory over rival Texas A&M-Kingsville.

  12. UTPB (3-1) Last Week: 11 - The Falcons handled the long trip to Silver City, N.M., and endured a long weather delay before the game to earn a big Lone Star Conference road win.

  13. Texas Wesleyan (2-1) Last Week: 15 - Will Texas Wesleyan make it two wins in a row over rival Wayland Baptist? Having a week off for rest and preparation can’t hurt.

  14. Angelo State (3-1) Last Week: 16 - ASU found itself in a defensive battle against Central Washington before prevailing 14-9 thanks to a late touchdown.

  15. Abilene Christian (3-1) Last Week: 22 - We found out some about ACU in a 56-0 win over Lamar. We will learn more this week after the Wildcats host Central Arkansas.

  16. East Texas Baptist (2-2) Last Week: 12 - The Tigers found out how improved Howard Payne is this year in a 49-38 loss last week. ETBU has an opportunity to rebound this week.

  17. West Texas A&M (2-2) Last Week: 17 - WT nearly sent a strong message to the rest of the region on the strength of the LSC. The Buffs seek a return to the win column at Western Oregon.

  18. Tarleton (2-2) Last Week: 18 - The Texans return to FCS competition this week following a dominating 40-21 win over New Mexico Highlands.

  19. Texas A&M-Kingsville (2-2) Last Week: 21 - The Javelinas were overmatched against a solid Texas A&M-Commerce team last week. TAMU-Kingsville has a bye week before a road test at Midwestern State.

  20. Prairie View A&M (3-1) Last Week: 25 - That’s two straight wins for PVAMU this season and another win over rival Grambling in the State Fair Classic.

  21. Tyler (2-2) Last Week: 14 - The Apaches offense sputtered in the first half and were unable to convert in the red zone against a stout Trinity Valley defense last week.

  22. SAGU (2-2) Last Week: 19 - SAGU nearly completed the upset before falling 52-45 to No. 24 Arizona Christian. The Lions have Arlington Baptist this week before a big game against Texas Wesleyan.

  23. McMurry (1-2) Last Week: 24 - The War Hawks are a much-improved team and will be competitive in most games. We find out this week if McMurry is on the level of crosstown rival Hardin-Simmons.

  24. Blinn (2-1) Last Week: 26 - The Buccaneers rolled to a victory last week and can make a statement this week against No. 12 New Mexico Military Institute.

  25. Lamar (2-2) Last Week: 23 - The margin against ACU had to be disappointing for the Cardinals following a thrilling overtime win the previous week. Lamar has a bye week before a trip to Sam Houston.

  26. Wayland Baptist (2-2) Last Week 29 - WBU handled its business in a 38-18 win over Texas College and has a tough task at Texas Wesleyan this week.

  27. Navarro (1-3) Last Week: 20 - The Bulldogs are reeling following a 39-15 road loss to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. This week is not easier with a trip to meet an angry Kilgore squad.

  28. Southwestern (1-3) Last Week: 30 - The schedule is not getting easier for a Southwestern team needing another victory with ETBU next on the schedule.

  29. Cisco (1-2) Last Week: 27 - The Wranglers needed the bye week and will need their offense to move the ball consistently against No. 7 Trinity Valley this week.

  30. Sul Ross State (1-2) Last Week: 32 - SRSU scored a late touchdown for a scintillating 12-10 win over Texas Lutheran. The Lobos needs the defense to be huge this week at Howard Payne.

  31. Texas Lutheran (1-3) Last Week: 28 - A late touchdown led to a heart-wrenching 12-10 road loss to Sul Ross State last week. A solid Belhaven squad visits this week.

  32. Austin College (1-2) Last Week: 31 - The good news for the ‘Roos is a return home following a long trip to Belhaven. The bad news is a visit by No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor.

  33. Texas Southern (0-3) Last Week: 34 - Raise your hand if you expected 82 combined points between TSU and Rice. Put your hand down unless you have proof. The Tigers can break a long losing streak this week against North American.

  34. Houston Baptist (0-3) Last Week: 33 - HBU received good news during the bye week following Blaine Bentsen’s scary head injury against PVAMU. The Huskies turn their focus to Nicholls this week.

  35. Texas College (0-4) Last Week: 35 - The Steers had their best performance of the season but still came up short against Wayland Baptist. TC tries to improve with a trip to NCAA DII Lane College this week.
