Tennis Heads To Cougar Classic

DENTON — The entire North Texas women tennis team is headed to University of Houston to compete in the Cougar Classic starting Friday and lasting through Sunday.

UNT will compete against Texas powers Rice, SMU and UH over the three day event.

This weekend's Cougar Classic will be singles and doubles. It's an event with a schedule that pins each of the Mean Green's eight players against either an opponent from the Mustangs, Owls or the Cougars every day.

This event will give the team great opportunity to get experience prior to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Texas Regional Championships, which begins Oct. 14 in Fort Worth.

"We have another great opportunity to continue improving and compete at a high level this weekend," said assistant coach Rodrigo de Almeida. "Each day that we are together the women are showing incredible discipline and have been very consistent with their progress. We are looking forward to seeing each of them display what we have been working on and fight hard for every point like the Mean Green do."

Mean Green senior Lucie Devier and freshman Jasmine Adams are coming off outstanding performances at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, which wrapped up on Sept. 19. It was the last competition for Adams and Devier. The Mean Green's doubles team of Devier and Adams reached the quarterfinals of the national tournament. In addition to their doubles performance, Adams made the round of 16 singles draw of the MTC.

Devier didn't make it as far in the singles draw but was able to play a consolation singles match. The senior battled her heart out in the third set against her opponent from Missouri. Devier went back-and-forth in the third set but eventually lost 15-13 in the final set of the consolation quarterfinal round. Devier had three match points.

The success Devier and Adams had at MTC came on the back of a fall season opener where the Mean Green dominated.

Earlier this month at the Islander Classic, North Texas won four flight championships. In total the Mean Green went 13-2 in singles and 9-3 in doubles at the event.

Devier and Adams took home one of the flight doubles titles along with Liisa Vehvilainen and Saki Oyama. Fellow UNT freshman Likhitha Kalava also took home a flight title at the event.

All three days of the Cougar Classic are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
