Very Artsy News: Chinati Weekend, EBONY Power 100 and more

The Chinati Foundation celebrates its 34th annual Open House this weekend in Marfa, Texas. 

Dust off your fall gear  because October is finally here. This month, we’re celebrating reading and literacy with National Book Month, continued programming with Inprint Houston, alongside a slew of exhibition openings and performances.

Here’s some art news for your week: 

The Houston Symphony’s Hispanic Leadership Council 

Last week, John Cisneros, Ed.D was chosen as the Houston Symphony’s chair for its 2021-2022 Hispanic Leadership Council. The symphony’s council is comprised of education, community and business leaders who help the Houston Symphony diversify their audience. Cisneros is a lifelong educator and advocate for equitable cultural experiences for Latinx people.

Houston Takes Chinati Weekend in Marfa, Texas 

Full of exhibitions, programs and events, the 34th annual Chinati Weekend celebration kicks off in Marfa, Texas on Friday, October 8. Local trombone player and founder of Nameless Sound, David Dove was one of nine artists commissioned by the Chinati Foundation to create an original score in response to a site-specific installation by American minimalist artist, Dan Flavin.

Rice Gallery Releases Book on Installation Art 

This Thursday, Oct 8, celebrate the launch of One Thing Well: 22 Years of Installation Art, Rice Gallery’s new book on the institution’s history of installation art. The book dives deep into the 72 site-specific installations that the Gallery commissioned between 1995 and 2017. The launch of the new book comes just in time for National Book Month this October.

The Asia Society Texas Center Opens Kana Harada Exhibition  

On Saturday, the Asia Society presents work by Japanese artist Kana Harada. Harada pushes the boundaries of sculpture, painting and installation to create inspiring works of art with hopeful and imaginative messages about the world.

Houston Natives Trae the Truth and Travis Scott Feature in EBONY Power 100 

EBONY is celebrating their annual Power 100 later this month, and Houston rappers Travis Scott and Trae the Truth have been nominated for their outstanding achievements in music and community building. All 100 nominates will be recognized in a ceremony taking place in Los Angeles later this month.
