MONTGOMERY, Texas – Making his collegiate debut, University of Houston freshman Logan Vargas stood in a tie for 14th after shooting an even-par 71 during the First Round of the Bentwater Intercollegiate on Monday.
 
Competing on the 6,788-yard, par-71 Miller Course at Bentwater Yacht & Country Club, Vargas began his collegiate career with a birdie on the par-5 first hole.
 
Although two bogeys in a three-hole stretch midway through his first nine moved him over par, she returned to even par with a birdie on the par-4 seventh hole. After making a bogey on No. 10 to open his second nine, the Lubbock, Texas, native drained another birdie on the par-3 11th hole.
 
Vargas then returned to red numbers with the first eagle of his collegiate career on the 502-yard, par-5 16th hole on the way to a 71.
 
Vargas was one of three Cougars to compete as individuals at the Bentwater Intercollegiate.
 
Freshman Julio Rios-Brache was tied for 18th with a 72. Junior Marcus Wochner was tied for 32nd at 74.
 
Texas State's Terrin Anderson held the first-day lead with a 68. He stood one shot ahead of Samual McKenzie (Midland CC), Chad Sewell (Sam Houston State), Raghav Chugh (Rice) and Jack Tanner (South Dakota State).
 
Texas State held the team lead at 285 to finish two shots in front of host Sam Houston State and Midland College. South Dakota State and South Alabama were tied for fourth at 289.

UP NEXT
Following the Bentwater Intercollegiate, the Cougars close out their fall schedule when they compete at The Williams Cup presented by Stitch Golf on Oct. 25-26 at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C.
 
From there, Houston will take its winter break before opening the spring season at the Border Olympics on Feb. 14-15 at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas.
