As October comes to a close and a myriad of music festivals prepare to land in the city, Houston is buzzing with arts and cultural events. The Good Vibes Only HTX takes place this weekend and the highly anticipated AstroWorld Fest in early November. Festival fun doesn’t stop at music though, the Houston Cinema Arts Festival has a stacked lineup. In the visual arts, Jamal Cyrus and Adriana Corral represented the Bayou City in New Orleans this past weekend for Prospect.5 Triennial. Here’s more art news for your week:

Application Deadline for The Idea Fund’s 15th Grant Cycle 

The Idea Fund, a local re-granting program that supports the work of practicing artists in the Greater Houston Area, is still accepting applications for their 15th grant cycle. Twelve grants of $5,000 will be awarded and grantees will be selected by a 3-person jury. Applications are due on November 15.

Alley Theatre’s Acclaimed Production of Sweat Is Available Online

Filmed in front of a live theatre audience, Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Sweat is now available for viewing today through November 7. The production marked the Alley Theatre’s return to the stage after 18 months. Digital tickets start at $25 and grant viewing access for a one-week period.

Rice University’s Kanisha Feliciano is Headed to Broadway 

Rising vocalist Kanisha Feliciano has won a role in James Lapine’s new Broadway musical, Flying Over Sunset. Set in 1950s Hollywood, the production plans to be a lively journey through the misadventures of three main characters. Although new to musical theater, Feliciano is an experienced opera singer who is finishing up a Shepherd School Artist Diploma at Rice University.

HAMILTON is Returning to Houston in 2022

Houston’s Hobby Center is welcoming the critically acclaimed Broadway production of HAMILTON from February 22-March 20, 2022. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, and Broadway and written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the play tells a revolutionary story of one of America’s founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton. Tickets, ranging from $49 to $179, and are on sale this Thursday, October 28 at 10 am..

Night Market at The Asia Society Texas Center Returns Next Month 

A celebration of diversity and culture, Asia Society Texas’ most beloved event returns Friday, November 12, featuring over 40 AAPI-owned restaurants and vendors. This year’s market will also include a special-access beer garden with a selection of hand-crafted drink and food options, as well as the launch of the Unity Wall, where guests are invited to write a pledge towards a more inclusive society.

Dr. Richard Fountain Nominated as Steinway’s Teacher of the Year 

Founded in 2019 to recognize the nation’s most passionate piano educators, Steinway & Sons Teacher Hall of Fame has inducted a Houston native, Dr. Richard Fountain, into their 2021 class. Fountain, a touring pianist and educator, was nominated by the Steinway Selection Center of Houston.
