Virginia Voter Guide: What to know on Election Day

Here is a list of the contested races and ballot questions in our area, along with biographical information.

VIRGINIA, USA — On Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2021 Virginia voters will be going to the polls to help elect candidates for the offices of governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, house of delegates and several local offices in the state.

In Virginia, election day polling places are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m -- anyone in line by 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote. You can find your polling place here: https://www.elections.virginia.gov/casting-a-ballot/polling-place-lookup.  

You do not need to bring your voter registration card to vote in Virginia but you do need to show an ID, or sign an ID Confirmation Statement to vote in person. According to the Virginia Board of Elections, acceptable forms of identification include:

  • Voter confirmation documents
  • Virginia DMV-issued driver’s license or ID card  (Virginia law permits an expired Virginia DMV license to be used for voting purposes. A Virginia driver’s privilege card is NOT acceptable for voting purposes.
  • United States Passport
  • Employer-issued photo ID
  • Student ID issued by a Virginia college/university/high school
  • Student photo ID issued by U.S. college/university
  • Other U.S. or Virginia government-issued ID
  • Tribal enrollment or other tribal ID
  • Virginia Voter Photo ID card
  • Any current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document with your name and address (within the past 12 months)

Governor

Terry McAuliffe (D)

Terry McAuliffe earned his bachelor's degree from Catholic University and his Juris Doctor from Georgetown Law School.

He worked as a businessman, political adviser for the Democratic Party and former Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, serving from 2001 to 2005. He served as co-chairman of President Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election campaign and chairman of Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign.

McAuliffe previously served as Governor of Virginia from 2014 to 2018. He succeeded Gov. Bob McDonnell (R).

Glenn Youngkin ( R)

Glenn Youngkin earned a bachelor's degree from Rice University in 1990 and a graduate degree from Harvard Business School in 1994.

He co-founded the Virginia Ready initiative, which helps Virginians reskill for in-demand jobs. He is also the former co-CEO and president of The Carlyle Group, a global investment firm, where he worked from 1995 to 2020.

Princess Blanding (L)

Princess Blanding earned her bachelor's degree in biology from Morgan State University. She then received a master's degree in K-12 education and supervision and a specialist degree in educational leadership.

Afterward, Blanding served as a middle school science teacher and as an assistant elementary and high school principal.

In 2018, Blanding's brother was fatally shot in an officer-involved shooting. In the aftermath, Blanding and her family founded Justice and Reformation, a community activism organization focused on policing reforms.

Lieutenant Governor

Hala Ayala (D)

Hala Ayala worked as a cybersecurity specialist with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. She founded and served as president of Prince William County's chapter of the National Organization for Women. She has served on Gov. McAuliffe's (D) Advisory Council on Women.

In 2017, Ayala and Elizabeth Guzman were the first Hispanic women in the state's history to be elected to the House of Delegates.

Winsome Sears (R )

Winsome Sears served in the United States Marines. She was also the Vice President of the Virginia State Board of Education and received presidential appointments to the US Census Bureau, where she co-chaired the African American Committee and the Advisory Committee on Women Veterans to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. She is also a trained electrician, the leader of a men’s prison ministry and a director of a women’s homeless shelter for The Salvation Army, according to her website.

Attorney General

Mark Herring (D)

Mark Herring is the current Attorney General and is seeking re-election. He has been Virginia's Attorney General since 2014. Before that, he served as a State Senator from Virginia's 33rd District from 2006 - 2014. He is the first Democrat to serve as Virginia’s attorney general in more than 20 years, and the first attorney general to be reelected in nearly 30 years, according to his website.

He received a B.A. in foreign affairs and economics and an M.A. in foreign affairs from the University of Virginia. He also received a J.D. from the University of Richmond.

Jason Miyares (R)

Jason Miyares received a B.B.A. in business administration from James Madison University in 1998 and a J.D. from the College of William & Mary in 2005.

He is a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, representing District 82. He assumed office in 2016.

He has worked as a private attorney, serving as a prosecutor, and he’s served in the office of Congressman Scott Rigell (R).

Candi P.M. King (D-incumbent)

As a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, Candi King served on the House Finance Committee, House Privileges and Elections Committee and the Public Safety Committee.

She earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Norfolk State University. She has served as a community relations professional and a special needs parent advocate and has previously volunteered with Freedom High School. She has also served as a Girl Scouts Troop Leader and Vice-Chair of the Woodbridge Democratic Committee. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Virginia Commission on Unemployment Compensation.

Gina R. Ciarcia (R)

Gina Garcia has served as a teacher full-time and through homeschooling her own children. She is the wife of a retired Marine officer and a mother of five.

Wendy Gooditis has served on the Agriculture, Chesapeake and Natural Resources Committee, Vice chair Counties, Cities and the Towns Committee Labor and Commerce Committee.

She received her bachelor's degree from Rutgers University and her M.Ed. from Shenandoah University. She has experience working as a realtor and in education.

Nicholas S. "Nick" Clemente (R)

Nick Clemente received his B.A. in Communications from Wittenberg University and his master’s degree in Social Entrepreneurship from George Mason University. He is a member of the Potomac Valley Officiating Association, primarily working youth basketball and softball games. He serves as the Membership Director for the Virginia chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors since 2018, helping small businesses find ways to thrive in a struggling economy. Danica Roem received a bachelor's degree in journalism from St. Bonaventure University and spent nine years reporting news in Prince William County, at the Prince William Times. Most recently, Roem served on the Communications, Technology and Innovation Committee Counties, Cities and Towns Committee and House Transportation Committee.

Christopher M. Stone (R)

Christopher Stone has served as an Air Force officer in regular, reserve and National Guard for over 17 years. As a National Guard officer, he served as a domestic contingency planner for situations such as natural disasters, pandemics, and civil unrest. He is also a business executive and worked as the Executive Director of a municipal chamber of commerce, building and sustaining local businesses. He has also served as a Vice President of a firm supporting senior government officials in both Republican and Democrat administrations, as well as domestic and international organizations.

S.M. "Rhett" Deitz (D)

Rhett Deitz graduated from James Madison University with a degree in social work, a field and passion she says has helped her transition into politics. She helps run a union print shop when not working on her family’s farm in Henry County. She said she decided to run in the 14th district after seeing how the COVID-19 pandemic affected her brother, who struggled with virtual learning due to not having access to affordable and functioning internet.

D.W. "Danny" Marshall, III (R-incumbent)

Danny Marshal is a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He assumed office in 2002 and is running to continue representing District 14. Marshall is a native of Pittsylvania County. He graduated from George Washington High School and later attended Danville Community and Averett Colleges. He is a former professional racecar driver, he finished 3rd at the 24 Hours of Daytona in both 1999 and 2000. He has also served on the Danville City Council, as president of the Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce and on numerous area development boards and commissions, including the Dan River Region Vision Committee.

Emily G. Scott (D)

Emily Scott was raised in Woodstock where she graduated from Central High School before attending Randolph Macon Women’s College. Scott moved to Michigan in the late 90’s while working in the tech industry. She later returned to Woodstock and currently works for the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen in Front Royal.

C. Todd Gilbert (R-incumbent)

Todd Gilbert graduated from Central High School in Woodstock in 1989. He later attended the University of Virginia and the Southern Methodist University School of Law. Gilbert was first elected to the House in 2005. In 2018, he was elected Republican Leader of the House of Delegates. Gilbert has won several awards during his tenure, including the Virginia YMCA’s “Service to Youth Award.” In 2017, he was named a “Legislator of the Year” by the Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

Douglas J. Ward (D)

71-year-old Dr. Douglas Ward lives in Rappahannock County with his husband Rev. Earl Johnson. Ward spent three years teaching junior high school in a small village in Liberia, West Africa after joining the Peace Corps while in college. He says that experience is what convinced him to pursue a “career helping others.” Ward later went to medical school and has spent the last 34 years practicing medicine in D.C. He strongly supports raising minimum wage and green energy.

Michael J. Webert (R-incumbent)

Michael Webert has called Virginia home since moving to Fauquier County in 1999. He is a graduate of George Mason University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Communications. He started managing his family farm, Locust Hill Farm, in 2007 after working as a radio producer. Webert says his family has strong ties to the environment and conservation. He also serves on the Rappahannock River Basin Commission.

Randall K. Wolf (D)

Randall Wolf grew up on a farm in eastern Pennsylvania. He would later become a journalist serving communities, both local and international, for over 40 years.  Wolf says that he spent his journalism career listening to people’s stories and using data to identify trends and find ways to share that information so that others could make informed decisions. Wolf says he will work to maintain open space, expand broadband and cell phone coverage and protect the environment.

G. "John" Avoli (R-incumbent)

John Avoli was born in Italy and came to America when he was 10 years old when his family moved to Weirton, West Virginia. Avoli graduated from Madonna High School and later attended the University of Richmond. He went on to become a teacher and football and track coach before earning his masters and continuing his career in education. In 1990, Avoli ran for Staunton City Council, he served for 16 years, including 14 as Staunton’s mayor.

Joshua G. Cole (D-incumbent)

Joshua Cole became the first African-American and youngest person to receive any party’s nomination when he ran for the Virginia House of Delegates to represent District 28 in 2017. Raised in the district, Cole has spent his entire life in Fredericksburg and Stafford County. He has served on the Stafford County Public Schools Superintendent’s Equity, Diversity and Opportunity Committee and is a member of the Greater Fredericksburg Area Interfaith Council and the former President of the Stafford County NAACP. Cole says he has been an advocate for Climate Change and lead legislation to rename Jefferson Davis Highway to Emancipation Highway.

Tara A. Durant (R)

Tara Durant has lived in Stafford County for 18 years. She is an elementary school teacher and served on the Board of the Fredericksburg Area Service League, the Citizens Review Panel with United Way, the PTO, and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. Durant says she was motivated to run for public office after a “tense encounter” with rioters last summer.

William D. "Bill" Wiley (R-incumbent)

Bill Wiley was elected to Winchester City Council in 2014, he was voted council vice-president one year later and council president in 2018. Prior to joining city council, Wiley served for five years on the Winchester Planning Commission and was Chairman for three of those years. Wiley breaks down his platform into six main categories: Taxes, jobs, the second amendment, police support, prolife and history.

Annette H. Hyde (D)

Annette Hyde is a 20-year yoga teacher living in Madison County. In 2019, she ran against Sen. Emmett Hanger after voters in her Senate district weren't able to choose a senator in a general election since 2007. She lost against Hanger but was able to flip the General Assembly to Democratic control for the first time since 1993. She's a founding member of Madison County's chapter of Moms Demand Action. And was appointed by the Madison County Board of Supervisors to the Virginia Career Works – Piedmont Workforce Development Board. She's also a member of the State Rehabilitation Council for the Virginia Department of the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Nick Freitas (R-incumbent)

Nick Freitas is an Army veteran who served with the 82nd Airborne Division and 25th Light Infantry Division as an Infantryman. He served two tours in Iraq as a Special Forces Weapons Sergeant and Special Forces Intelligence Sergeant before he was honorably discharged in 2009. Freitas worked alongside Virginia Senate candidate Bryce Reeves, who went on to defeat a 28-year Democrat incumbent. He was elected to be the Culpeper County Republican Committee Chairman in 2014.

Elizabeth R. Guzman (D-incumbent)

Elizabeth Guzman is a social worker and public administrator who was one of the first two LatinX women elected to the House of Delegates. She defeated a 16-year Republican incumbent in Virginia’s 2017 election. She serves as Vice-Chair of the Education Committee and was named 2020’s “Legislator of the Year” by the Virginia Education Association and by the Fairfax County Federation of Teachers.

Ben Baldwin served in the Marines for ten years. He currently works as a financial advisor helping families secure their financial future. He currently serves as a member of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce, and as a member of the Veterans Council and Economic Development Committee and is a member of the American Legion.

David A. Reid (D-incumbent)

David Reid served as a Naval Intelligence Officer for 23 years until 2011 before he honorably retired as Commander. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal on three occasions. He started his own small business called Rockbridge Consulting, where he specializes in studies and analysis. He is a recreational and travel soccer coach and is a certified soccer referee. David and his family also volunteer at the Loudoun Interfaith Relief food pantry.

Paul W. Siker (D)

Paul Siker is a 33-year-old resident of Loudoun County. Siker has spent the majority of his professional career in technical recruitment and has recently focused his business on talent acquisition training/consulting engagements. He served as Vice-Chair and Chair of the Community Foundation of Loudoun & Northern Fauquier Counties. He currently serves on the board for the Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter (LAWS).

Dave A. LaRock (R)

Dave LaRock currently represents the 33rd District in the Virginia House of Delegates. He and his wife own a general contractor business, building two to three homes a year. Dave started his political career in 2008 helping conservative candidates campaign for office. He served as Blue Ridge District Chairman for the Loudoun County Republican Committee.

Kathleen J. Murphy (D-incumbent)

Kathleen Murphy has represented Virginia's 34th District for the past six years. She is a member of the House Finance, Transportation, and General Laws Committees. She also founded the House Gun Violence Prevention Caucus and introduced several bills to keep firearms out of the streets. She serves as the Vice-Chair of the House Democratic Caucus and also belongs to the Military and Veterans Caucus and the Virginia Environment and Renewable Energy Caucus. She also serves on the Board of Veterans Services and chairs the Women Veterans Workgroup.

Gary G. Pan (R)

Gary Pan is a 30-year resident of Northern Virginia. He founded two small businesses that were recognized by Inc. Magazine as among the 100 fastest-growing private companies in America. He has served on the boards of several local organizations such as the Great Falls Citizen Association, Great Falls Grange Foundation, Rotary Club of Great Falls, Northern Virginia Technology Council.

Mark L. Keam (D-incumbent)

Mark Keam currently represents Virginia's 35th District. He became the first Asian-born immigrant and the first Korean American elected to any state-level office in Virginia in 2009. Mark serves on the House Commerce & Labor Committee, Finance Committee, Education Committee, and Agriculture, Chesapeake & Natural Resources Committee.

Kevin E. McGrath (R)

Kevin McGrath was born and raised in Fairfax. Having earned a degree in Political Science from Virginia Tech, McGrath joined the CIA in 1978 and retired in 2015. McGrath describes himself as a political activist, doing whatever he could since 1976 to help Republican candidates win offices in Virginia and national elections. His platform focuses on several issues, including ending lockdown, lowering state income taxes and supporting the second amendment.

Ken Plum is a retired school teacher and administrator. He served as Director of Adult and Community Education, Fairfax County Public Schools and has been a member of the Virginia House of Delegates since 1982.

Matthew J. Lang (R)

Matt Lang describes himself as a veteran, father and husband. Recently, he retired from the US Navy Reserve and currently works as an International Security Officer for an international aid organization. Matthew says he plans to fight for the hardworking people of Virginia’s 36th District.

David L. Bulova (D-incumbent)

David Bulova lives in Fairfax with his wife and children. He received a bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary and later received a Masters in Public Administration and Policy from Virginia Tech. He is also a graduate of the Sorensen Institute of Political Leadership at the University of Virginia. Bulova was elected to the General Assembly in 2005. He currently serves on the General Laws, Appropriations, Education, and Agriculture, Chesapeake, and Natural Resources committees.  He is also chair of the General Laws Committee and chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Agriculture, and Natural Resources, as well as many other boards and commissions.

Kenny W. Meteiver ®

Kenny Meteiver was born and raised in Indiana and later moved to Virginia with his wife in 2014. Meteiver enlisted in the United State Army as a Combat Engineer following the September 11 attacks. Meteiver says he is running for the House of Delegates because the Commonwealth of Virginia is seeing issues such as skyrocketing debt, burdensome government actions and regulations.

L. Kaye Kory (D-incumbent)

Kaye Kory and her husband have lived in Fairfax County for over 35 years. She became well known for being a very vocal critic of the Fairfax County School Board and administration, later winning a special election for the Mason District seat on the school board in 1999. She has been a member of the Fairfax County Democratic Committee since 2001. She is the chair of the House Committee on Counties, Cities and Towns,The Animal Welfare Caucus, and The Joint Women's Health Care Caucus, Disability Commission.

Tom L. Pafford (R)

Tom Pafford says he plans to focus on several issues as part of his campaign, including after school programs for children, increasing funding to keep police in schools, equity, removing “Sexual Education” from being taught in schools and replacing it with more academic studies, ending transgender students from using the bathrooms of their chosen gender and removing critical race theory from the curriculum.

Vivian E. Watts (D-incumbent)

Watts is the longest-serving woman in the Virginia House of Delegates. She is a ranking minority member of the Courts of Justice, Finance and Science and Technology committees. She was first elected in 1981 and left to serve as Virginia’s Secretary of Transportation and Safety in 1986. Watts was elected back to the House in 1996.

Watts graduated from the University of Michigan as an English major with minors in math and psychology. She served as Executive Director of Fairfax Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) helping children in abuse and neglect cases.

Maureen T. Brody (R)

Maureen Brody is a lifelong Virginian who has served in volunteer positions relating to education, sports, homeowners’ associations, church, scouts and roadside and stream cleanups in Fairfax County for the last 35 years.

Dan I. Helmer (D-incumbent)

Dan Helmer is a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve and West Point graduate who has served tours in Iraq, Afghanistan and Korea. He also runs a business helping veterans access quality healthcare.

Harold Y. Pyon (R)

Harold Pyon is a manager at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where he has worked since 1985. Pyon has served on the Fairfax County Park Authority Board, Virginia Board of Elections, Fairfax County Small Business Commission and as Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

He obtained an M.S. in chemical engineering at the University of Virginia, attended George Washington University Law School and earned a graduate certificate in Advanced Public Management, Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.

Eileen Filler-Corn (D-incumbent)

Eileen Filler-Corn is House Speaker and is the first woman and Jew to hold the position. She has served in the House of Delegates since 2010.

Filler-Corn served on the PTA in Fairfax and co-chaired the Safe Virginia Initiative Task Force, which solicited feedback from Virginians about how to combat gun violence after the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida. She was an organizer of the Million Mom March in Washington D.C. to call for stricter gun control. She graduated from Ithaca College with a B.A.

John M. Wolfe (R)

John Wolfe has served as PTA president and vice president as well as a scout leader in Fairfax County. Wolfe has lived in the 41st district for more than 40 years.

Wolfe attended Vanderbilt University and obtained an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Kathy K. "KL" Tran (D-incumbent)

Kathy Tran was first elected in 2017. She served at the U.S. Department of Labor and did advocacy work at the National Immigration Forum. She served as president of her local PTA.

Tran graduated from Duke University and earned her Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan.

Edward F. McGovern (R)

Ed McGovern coordinated resources at the Department of the Army and spent seven years in Japan and Panama serving the federal government. McGovern is Newington Precinct Captain and a member of the Fairfax County Republican Committee. He serves on his Homeowners Association Board and was involved with youth sports.

McGovern has a Master’s in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and political science degree from Shippensburg University.

Mark D. Sickles (D-incumbent)

Mark Sickles is House Democratic Caucus Deputy Minority Leader and has served in the House of Delegates since 2004. From 1995 to 1998 he served as Chairman of the Fairfax County Democratic Committee. Sickles has served on the Fairfax County Library Board and President of United Community Ministries, a nonprofit providing employment services and resources for people without homes.

He has two Master’s degrees from Georgia Tech and a B.S. from Clemson University.

Brenton H. Hammond (R)

Brenton Hammond served in the United States Secret Service Uniformed Division for eight years before joining a defense contracting company.
