OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball seniors
Abby Bottomley and
Jaela Zimmerman have each earned Academic All-District 7 distinction from the College Sports Information Directors of America. The Bluejays are the only school in District 7 with a First Team choice in each of the past five campaigns.
The 2021-22 Academic All-District® Volleyball Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes volleyball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in mid-December.
District 7 includes eight states (Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas). District 7 saw seven women named First Team selections among dozens of nominees. Creighton is the only BIG EAST school with a representative on any CoSIDA Academic All-District squad.
Bottomley is recognized for the third consecutive season as a CoSIDA First Team All-District choice, having also been a District 3 selection in both 2019-20 and 2020-21 while a student-athlete at High Point University. The fifth-year senior ranks 11th in NCAA history with 2,636 career digs. She ranks second in the BIG EAST and 25th nationally with 5.03 digs per set and is also 4th in the BIG EAST in aces per set. A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Bottomley owned a 3.89 as an undergrad while studying Finance & Marketing at High Point, and has a perfect 4.00 GPA in Business Analytics in grad school at Creighton. Last year she was named a Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Zimmerman is an Exercise Science and owns a 3.37 GPA. The Lincoln, Neb., product ranks second in the BIG EAST in kills per set, second in points per set, 11th in digs per set and 20th in aces per set. Along with teammate
Norah Sis, Zimmerman is one of women in the league to average at least 3.00 digs and 3.00 kills per set. Zimmerman was a First Team CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 honoree last season, when she was named an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American and the East Region Player of the Year.
Bottomley and Zimmerman have helped Creighton to the nation's No. 12 RPI and a nation-leading 26 victories. The Bluejays will close their regular-season this weekend with home matches vs. Seton Hall (Friday, 6:30 pm) and St. John's (Sunday 1 p.m.), and can clinch at least a share of an eighth straight BIG EAST regular-season title with a pair of victories.
