SLU Hosts Ragin' Cajuns on Thanksgiving Eve

Lady Lions (2-2) look for third straight victory on Wednesday at 7 p.m .in the UC

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team will attempt to extend its winning streak to three games on Wednesday, when it welcomes UL Lafayette for a 7 p.m. contest in the University Center.
 
The game between the Lady Lions (2-2) and the visiting Ragin' Cajuns (3-1) will be televised on ESPN+. Presleigh Scott and Dijone' Flowers will be Wednesday's Spotlight Players of the Game and the first 150 fans will receive trading cards featuring the Southeastern freshmen duo, courtesy of PRIDE.
 
Wednesday is also Community Night and the first 150 fans will receive free pizza. Following the game, Lady Lion players will be available for photographs and to sign schedule posters.
 
Southeastern picked up a 69-58 victory at Alcorn State last Friday for its first win on the road of the young 2021-22 season. Chrissy Brown led SLU with 16 points off the bench, while Breonca Ducksworth added 12 points and a game-high five assists. Hailey Giaratano and Caitlyn Williams each grabbed seven rebounds, as the Lady Lions finished with a 43-32 rebounding edge.
 
Daija Harvey leads a balanced Southeastern attack with 8.5 points per game, followed by Brown (8.0 ppg), Morgan Carrier (7.0 ppg) and Cierria Cunningham (7.0 ppg). Giaratano and Ducksworth share team-high honors with 2.5 assists per contest.
 
SLU has held the rebounding edge in each of its last two games. Williams (5.3 rpg), Giaratano (5.0 rpg) and Natalie Kelly (4.8 rpg) are the top producers on the boards for Southeastern.
 
Opponents are averaging 56.5 points and committing 19.0 turnovers per contest versus the Lady Lions. Taylor Bell has a team-high seven steals heading into Thursday's contest.
 
Williams is among the program's career leaders with 663 rebounds (9th) and 82 blocked shots (4th). Carrier ranks in the Southeastern career top 10 in three-point field goals made (136, 5th) and attempted (385, 6th), while Harvey's 39.8 career three-point percentage is the second-highest in program history.
 
UL Lafayette has wins over Texas A&M-Kingsville (84-58, Nov. 9), Rice (73-69, Nov. 13) and New Orleans (64-45, Nov. 20) sandwiched around a 70-41 home loss to LSU on Nov. 18.  
 
Brandi Williams leads the Ragin' Cajuns with 15.3 points per game and has connected on 63.6 (7-for-11) percent of her three-point field goal attempts. Destiny Rice (9.5 ppg), Ty'Reona Doucet (8.5 ppg) and Tamera Johnson (8.5 ppg) are the other top scorers for UL Lafayette.
 
Rice has dished out a team-high 2.8 assists per game, while Doucet leads the team with 4.0 rebounds per outing. Doucet also paces the squad with three blocked shots, while Williams has six steals to lead UL Lafayette.
 
Wednesday's game will be the 48th all-time meeting between the in-state rivals with Southeastern holding a 29-18 advantage. The Ragin' Cajuns have won the last seven meetings, including most recently a 60-50 victory in 2019-20 in Lafayette.
 
Wednesday is the first of two home games this week for the Lady Lions, who will welcome Utah State on Saturday at noon. Admission is free for Saturday's contest. Harvey and Jaylen Huderson will be Saturday's Spotlight Players of the Game and the first 150 fans will receive trading cards featuring the sophomore duo, courtesy of PRIDE.
