MBB: Huskies Win Gives Cottrell Career Win No. 500

Lee, Hofman and Tordoff combine to score 61 points

HOUSTON – James Sears Bryant Head Men's Basketball Coach Ron Cottrell earned career victory number 500 on Tuesday evening as the Huskies defeated Champion Christian in Sharp Gym, 84-67.
 
A pair of Huskies (3-5) set new career-highs for scoring with 19 points in the win with senior Zion Tordoff netting his first career double-double, scoring 19 to go along with 10 rebounds. Six of his boards came on the offensive end and he was 8-of-11 from the floor. Sam Hofman also tallied 19 points, connecting on 7-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. He also added five rebounds.
 
Darius Lee continued his torrid stretch and totaled 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Over the last three games, Lee is shooting 79.4 percent (27-of-34) from the floor for 63 points to go along with 29 rebounds. Jade Tse totaled four steals for a new career-best and dished out seven assists. Brycen Long was the fourth Husky to score in double-figures, scoring 10 with five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
 
The Huskies scored the first 11 points of the game and Lee contributed eight of the team's first 13 points. HBU built that lead to 17, 22-5, before a 10-1 run by the Tigers pulled Champion back to within eight. That was the closest the Tigers got the rest of the way as HBU pushed its lead and closed the first half on a 12-3 run over the final 4:01 and led 51-22 at the break.
 
In the second half, the Huskies led by double-digits throughout but Champion Christian made a late push and got to within 13 inside of 2:00 on the clock before HBU scored the final four points of the contest. The Tigers shot 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from beyond the arc in the second half.
 
AJ Williams led Champion with 23 points and eight assists while Braylon Hawking added 17 points and eight rebounds. The Tigers shot 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the floor while the Huskies connected on 48.5 percent (32-of-66). HBU held a 46-32 advantage on the boards.
 
HBU's four-game homestand closes this coming Saturday, Dec. 11, with a 7:00 p.m. tip against crosstown foe Rice.
