HOUSTON – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball fell to Rice University, 85-55, on Thursday, Dec. 16. The Cardinals were led by a 21-point, season-high performance by Drew Lutz.
 
Johnny Hughes III (7) and Dylan Hayman (7) combined for 14 points for the Cardinals. Hughes had a team-high nine rebounds.
 
Lutz led the Cardinals in the first half with 12 of UIW's 23 points while going a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line. Brandon Swaby rushed down the court with five seconds left in the first half, pulled up for the corner three but it was no good. Rice took an early advantage and continued to push throughout the first half, jumping ahead 39-23 before the break.
 
Hughes got the Cardinals started in the second half, adding five quick points with a pull-up jumper and a strong drive to the basket followed by a made free throw to secure the three-point play. Swaby kept the energy going with a quick drive to the basket. Hayman did not let up for UIW, draining a jumper from the top of the key and a corner three to cut the Owls scoring run. UIW continued to fight, but the Owl offense proved to be strong as they secured the victory.

The Cardinals travel to West Lafayette, Indiana, to match up against Purdue University on Monday, Dec. 20. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CT.
