MBB: Huskies Open the New Year Against Ecclesia

HBU has one last game before the next 17 come against Southland opponents

HOUSTON – More than three weeks since its last game, the HBU men's basketball team is set to ring in the new year against Ecclesia in Sharp Gym on Monday evening ahead of the Southland Conference Tip-Off beginning on Thursday. Husky fans can catch all the action on the Husky Sports Network broadcast with Garrett Jones on play-by-play, available at HBUHuskies.com.
 
The Huskies (3-6) have not played since December 11 when they faced Rice after the team's Dec. 21 game at Florida International was postponed until next year due to health and safety protocols. Following Monday's game against Ecclesia (6-5), HBU will play its next 17 games against fellow Southland Conference members. The Southland Tip-Off Event is set for Thursday, Jan. 6, through Saturday, Jan. 8 before SLC play begins on Saturday, Jan. 15. In Lake Charles, La. against McNeese.
 
Senior Darius Lee leads the Huskies in scoring with 12.7 points per game, ranking seventh in the SLC, while his 9.4 rebounds per game is the 24th-highest average in the nation. Sophomore Brycen Long is second on the squad in scoring, averaging 10.4 ppg and is shooting 44.2 percent (19-of-43) from three-point range.
 
Ecclesia is led by junior Meron Ghebreyesus who is averaging 18.7 ppg against National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) opponents. Fellow junior Jaquan Dotson leads the Royals with 8.1 rebounds per game and is second with 16.5 ppg. As a team, Ecclesia is averaging 82.6 ppg this season.
 
The SLC Tip-Off Event will be held in Katy, Texas at the Merrell Center, site of the 2021-22 SLC Championship Tournament in March, over the course of three days beginning Thursday, Jan. 6, and concluding on Saturday, Jan. 8. The Huskies' first game of the event is Thursday at 11:00 a.m. against Southeastern. Depending on the outcome of Thursday's games, HBU will play either McNeese or New Orleans on Friday.
