DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team hosts a top 50 showdown Thursday night at the Super Pit as UAB comes to town.

Thursday's contest is schedule to tip-off at 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network and on the radio on the Mean Green Sports Network with Dave Barnett and Hank Dickenson on the call.

"We still have a sour taste in our mouth from last season's game," said sophomore big man Abou Ousmane. "It worked out in the end but we know this is going to be a great game. They're a great team and we know it's an opportunity for us to make an early statement."

In Wednesday's updated NET ranking, the Mean Green (8-3, 1-0) who are on a six-game winning streak earned a season-high No. 50 position and UAB (12-3, 2-0) came in at No. 43. Thursday's game will feature two of the nation's premiere defenses.

The Blazers, who are on a three-game winning streak and have won seven of their last eight, bring to the Super Pit a hectic defense that forces turnovers and pressures teams into poor offensive possessions. UAB ranks first in the nation in steals with an average of almost eight a game.

North Texas owns the nation's second-best scoring defense, holding opponents to just 54 points per game on average. During their current six-game winning streak, the Mean Green are holding opponents to 49 points per game. On Saturday in their 32-point win over Rice, the Mean Green held an Owls offense that was averaging over 80 points a game to a season-low 43 points and held them to just three made 3-pointers. It took Rice almost 19 minutes of game action to make a single 3-pointer. Furthermore, in the second half, UNT held Rice without a field goal for a 12-minute stretch that helped them increase its lead from 13 points to 37 points.

UNT will be once against tested with a potent offense as the Blazers are averaging over 82 points per game headed into Thursday.
