HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (7-10, 0-4 C-USA) dropped a home contest to the Rice Owls (10-6, 3-2 C-USA), 87-77, on Saturday night in the Cam Henderson Center.

"The backside has to flow out. We were there, but with a team like this you can't just be there, you have to take it away," Herd men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the loss. "I'm going to go out there and work every day to let them know I'm not quitting. It has to be hard work, focus, and bonding together. We pull together with each other and see if we can turn this season around."

With a career-high tying 31 points and a season-high 10 assists with no turnovers, junior Taevion Kinsey recorded his first double-double of the season.

Freshman Obinna Anochili-Killen followed with 17 points, eight boards and five blocks in the contest.

Redshirt sophomore Andrew Taylor finished the game a perfect 5-for-5 from the field for 12 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds and four steals.

Rice's Carl Pierce tallied 30 points as he went 8-for-12 from behind the arc.

Taylor scored the opening points with a layup 57 seconds into the game. Kinsey followed with a jumper just over a minute later as MU led 4-3 at the 17:57 mark.

However, the Owls used four runs of four or more points, including a pair of 8-0 advantages, to lead by as many as 15 points in the opening 20 minutes. The Herd trailed 44-31 at halftime.

Marshall came out of the break hot scoring nine of the first 13 points in the second half. It then used a 10-0 run from 13:39 to 11:37 to pull within two points, 52-50. Kinsey had four points as Anochili-Killen, Taylor and senior Darius George each contributed two during the streak.

Four minutes later, Kinsey and George each made a jumper to tie the contest, 58-58, with 8:35 remaining.

Rice answered with an 11-2 run to go back on top, 69-60, 2:30 after the Herd's advantage. The Owls then used its third 8-0 streak of the game to extend its lead back to double digits, 80-68, with a minute left in the game.

Rice made seven of its final eight attempts from the free-throw line to hold off Marshall.

NOTES
Kinsey reached double-figure scoring for the 51st consecutive outing and the guard recorded 30 or more points for the second time this season.

The Herd made a three in its 987th consecutive game, with the last contest without a triple occurring on Feb. 27, 1989, in a win over App State.

George played in his 128th career game, tying Ryan Taylor (2013-17) for fourth most games played in program history.

Anochili-Killen notched his 14th game of 10 or more points this season as Taylor recorded his 11th such game.
