North Texas Set to Battle the Lady Toppers

1/14/2022 2:05:00 PM | Women's Basketball

DENTON, Texas – North Texas women's basketball is set to host the red-hot Western Kentucky Lady Toppers for its final game of the home stand. The game is slated for Saturday at 2 p.m. (CT) inside the Super Pit. The game will broadcast on ESPN+ and Zac Babb will have the call on KNTU 88.1 FM.

WKU is riding a six-game winning streak into Denton. On Thursday night, the Lady Toppers trounced Rice in Houston, 78-61. Western Kentucky's Merel Abdelgawad, a two-time C-USA Player of the Week, recorded her fourth game this season with at least 33 points. She is tied for the most in the NCAA this season. The Lady Toppers have also gotten good run out of freshman, Mya Meredith. She is the team's second leading scorer averaging 13.7 points per game. She has also received the C-USA Freshman of the Week honors in the past two weeks.

UNT got a much-needed win against Marshall on Thursday, snapping a three-game skid. Jazion Jackson returned to her truest form with a game-high 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists. North Texas handed Marshall its first loss in conference play with a balanced effort across the board.

Preseason C-USA Player of the Year, Quincy Noble continues to show why she was so highly regarded this season. She has registered double figures in 11 out of 12 games this year.  Aly Gamez does it all for North Texas, she leads in minutes, is a top-three scorer, and is notching a team-best 5.6 defensive rebounds per contest. Gamez has also recorded 10+ points in seven out of the last nine games.

North Texas will hit the road next week to face Charlotte (Jan. 20) and Old Dominion (Jan. 22). Both games will broadcast on CUSA.TV.

QUOTING HEAD COACH JALIE MITCHELL
"I think it's important for us to show that we can be consistent. Specifically on defense and rebounding. Those two things were huge keys for us last night. If we can be consistent on defense, executing our offense, and cleaning up the boards, I think we will be pleased with the outcome. Western Kentucky is a good team that's hot right now, and they're obviously very talented. I do think our game will be hard fought and competitive. We're looking forward to getting back out onto the floor Saturday."
