January is barreling to a close and there are lots of updates to start the week. The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts awarded $280,000 in grants to DiverseWorks, Menil Collection and FotoFest.
This week, the Asia Society is hosting a conversation with former presidential candidate Andrew Yang on the future of American democracy and Inprint welcomes must-know authors Honorée Fanonne Jeffers and Tiphanie Yanique for a virtual reading.

Fresh Arts Reconfigures its Annual Gala and Art Auction
Due to the COVID-19 surge, Fresh Arts has canceled its Unbelieve-A-Ball and reimagined the annual art auction. Because the gala accounts for nearly 20 percent of the nonprofit’s funding, the organization has planned a hybrid fundraiser to take place January 22-29. Art enthusiasts can bid on over 50 artworks online, or in person, at participating satellite spaces throughout Houston. Later this year, Fresh Arts plans to host a birthday party to celebrate 20 years of arts advocacy.

Discovery Green Granted $15,000 from the NEA
Discovery Green Conservancy received a grant from the National Endowment to support Tejas Got Soul, a free, three-part concert series celebrating the legacy of Tejano music. The grant will also support panel discussions, a social media campaign and the digital release of the performances. Tejas Got Soul is slated to take place this fall. Discovery Green is one of over 20 Houston art institutions to receive the grant.

Calder-Picasso-Inspired Concerts at MFAH
Enjoy free performances Da Camera Young Artists, a chamber music fellowship program, inspired by themes in the Calder-Picasso exhibition currently on view at MFAH through January.
The first concert’s 30-minute performance will be presented twice on Thursday, January 20 at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and the second concert on Thursday, January 27 at the same time. Each concert is free, with general admission.

Rice Cinema Announces New Programming
For the spring semester, Rice Cinema has launched Warhol Wednesday to feature films made by Andy Warhol. The series kicks off with Couch (1964, 52 min) and Soap Opera (1964, 46 min) on Wednesday, January 26 at 8 p.m., with an introduction by Rice University’s Bruce Hainley.
