Cougars open season Feb. 18 against Cal on MLB Network

HOUSTON – Houston Baseball's Ryan Hernandez has been named Perfect Game's Preseason All-American Athletic Conference at designated hitter, highlighting recognition for the Cougars entering the 2022 season.

Hernandez, touted as a "potential player of the year candidate" by the publication, led Houston in hits (52), multi-hit games (16), RBIs (37) and home runs (11) a season ago. The Boston, Mass., native batted .287 including .310 (27 for 87) with runners aboard.

Meanwhile, right-handed pitchers Jaycob Deese and Derrick Cherry were recognized as 2022's No. 13 and No. 14 overall prospects in The American. Deese fanned 52 batters in 66.2 innings a season ago, tossing 5.0-plus frames in six of his seven starts. Cherry posted a 2.85 ERA alongside five saves, holding opponents to a .217 average (18 for 83) with runners aboard.

Houston opens its 56-game schedule three weeks from Friday (Feb. 18) against Cal in Scottsdale, Arizona. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. CT. The contest can be seen on MLB Network and heard on The Varsity app.  PERFECT GAME PREVIEW: HOUSTON
"The Cougars had one of the highest draft picks in the conference as left-hander Robert Gasser went in the second round. Outside of Gasser and a couple of seniors, Head Coach Todd Whitting returns a fair bit of talent as the Cougars look set up to return to Regionals in Whitting's 12th year at the helm.

Jaycob Deese will return to the rotation following a 4.46 ERA last season and a big fastball flirting with triple digits, while closer Derrick Cherry is one of the toughest at-bats in the conference as he'll see many innings.

Transfer Logan Clayton has the chops to start right away while fellow transfer Zach Arnold should make an immediate impact offensively. Senior Ryan Hernandez is back as one of the most accomplished Cougars in recent memory. The veteran returnees plus impact transfers make Houston an intriguing club and one that should be near the top of The American."
