No political arrests in HK - pro-Beijing politician

Hong Kongers are “arrested and put to jail not because of their political stance, but because they’ve broken the law,” a newly elected pro-Beijing legislative councillor says.

When asked about raids on university campuses, arrests of democracy campaigners and banning of teachers, Dominic Lee Tsz King told BBC Hardtalk’s Stephen Sackur: “Some of them have engaged in violent protests have engaged in vandalism, have engaged in incitement” which are “common law offences”.

Lee Tsz King of the New People’s Party won a seat in December 2021’s legislative elections, which saw pro-Beijing candidates sweep the board.

Many Hong Kong pro-democracy activists and politicians have been arrested or forced into exile.

Some newspapers have closed and critical voices silenced amid a growing crackdown.
